Bailey House docent Tracy Wittman traveled to Sacramento with the Whittier Historical Society & Museum to visit Preston Castle Foundation,Ione Ca. to learn more about the starting years of the Whittier State School. Both the Preston and Whittier "castle" buildings were built during the 1890's and share a common history in the early years of reforming delinquent youths.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Bailey House 150th Anniversary Ice Cream Social last Sunday, July 29. We saw many old friends as well as quite a few first time visitors. Unfortunately it was a very hot day, but maybe that made the ice cream taste even better!
Thanks to our sponsors who made it possible to produce this free event: Stater Bros. Market, Rite Aid Pharmacy, and the Whittier Historical Association. Thank you to the City of Whittier, especially to our Parks Dept. crew who take such good care of the Bailey House.
A huge thank you to the mothers and daughters of the National Charity League who scooped ice cream and entertained kids with our collection of wooden toys.
Thanks also to fiber arts crafters Barbara Light and Pat Hay, and musicians Margret Nagy, Iris Harris and her student.
Last but certainly not least, thank you to the Friends of the Bailey House docents, who provide tours of the Bailey House on Sundays and school tours for children and other groups. You help keep our history alive in Whittier!

There is a famous artwork hanging at the Bailey House just above the “Lincoln” bookcase. It is a scene you have probably seen before in many a school textbook, “First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the cabinet.”

Perhaps more interesting to the historically inclined Whittierite is where the artwork came from. This artwork was donated by Mildred Jackson Johns. She states in her donation notes, “This steel engraving of Abraham Lincoln’s war cabinet was acquired by my Aunt Lydia J. Jackson sometime early in 1900. She prized this picture very much and it hung in her living room for as long as I can remember.” This happens to be the same Lydia Jackson for whom the elementary school on Painter Ave. is named. Like the Baileys, Lydia was raised in Ohio and she became a teacher there. When she moved to Whittier to help her brothers, she never taught school here, but became an ardent education supporter and trustee of Whittier Academy/College.

The other photo shows some of Lydia Jackson’s family and was taken in June, 1978, when they presented a portrait of Lydia Jackson to the school that bears her name. Mildred Johns is in the front row, second from the left. Photo courtesy of the Whittier Historical Society and was originally from the Whittier Daily News.
