Before the Mighty Mo returned to active service in 1986, Russell Hall was already aboard helping prepare her for what came next. ⚓

Mr. Hall served aboard USS Missouri from 1985–1987 as an EM2 in E-Division and is a recommissioning plankowner.

He visited the ship in September with his wife Nancy and shared memories from his time aboard — including sleeping in the ship’s 1940s-style racks as a member of the pre-commissioning crew, before newer racks were installed.

Mr. Hall stood watch in the Lighting and Tool Issue Shops and at the Engine Room switchboards. He also served as the electrician assigned to the ship’s “Flying Squad” damage control team.

Decades later, it was a pleasure to have him walking the decks of the Mighty Mo once again.

Before leading the Navy in World War II, Ernest J. King wrote a 1909 prize essay on shipboard organization. In 1960, Chester W. Nimitz addressed junior officers about a naval career. These two distinguished officers used Proceedings to speak to their profession.

Throwback Thursday! USS Wisconsin is seen underway in this black and white picture from the late 1980s. Note the Nixie towed anti torpedo doors in the stern. The Iowa’s retained their 40mm gun tub bulges in the stern of the ships when recommissioned. At least one of these were converted into refueling stations for helicopters. Nauticus 🛟

Happy Hump Day!

USS Missouri is seen here having her 16-inch shells removed following her return from Desert Storm. The last time the "Mighty Mo" had fired her guns in anger was during the Korean War. I hope you all have a blessed day!
