Throwback Thursday! ⚓

USS Wisconsin underway with other U.S. warships in the western Pacific during the final months of World War II, circa December 1944–August 1945.

Photographed by Lt. Barrett Gallagher, USNR, this image captures Wisconsin during her first wartime deployment—a period that would take the battleship from the Philippines to Iwo Jima and Okinawa and ultimately to the waters off Japan.

More than 80 years later, this piece of American naval history is still with us. Today, you can walk the decks of USS Wisconsin at Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia, and stand aboard the very battleship pictured here.

From the western Pacific in 1945 to Norfolk today—BB-64 endures. 🇺🇸⚓

September 1968. Battleship New Jersey fires her 16-inch guns in the South China Sea during her Vietnam deployment.

Each shell fired from these guns could weigh up to 2,700 pounds, with a muzzle velocity of 1,700 miles per hour. Today, guests who visit the ship can explore inside the turret to see the machinery that made this firepower possible.

On This Day — September 2, 1945

Eighty-one years ago today, representatives of the Empire of Japan came aboard USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay to formally surrender to the Allied Powers.

At 0902, the ceremony began on Missouri’s starboard veranda deck. Representatives of Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender, followed by representatives of the Allied nations. General Douglas MacArthur presided over the ceremony, with Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signing on behalf of the United States.

The ceremony lasted only about 20 minutes, but its significance was enormous. After nearly six years of global war—and almost four years of war for the United States—the Second World War was formally over.

USS Missouri had been commissioned only the year before. Yet on September 2, 1945, the newest of America’s battleships became the setting for one of the most important moments of the 20th century.

Today, we remember the men and women who served, those who never came home, and the historic role played by the Mighty Mo on the day World War II officially came to an end.

Look closely — you can actually see three 16-inch shells in flight.

In August 1944, the USS Missouri conducted gunnery trials in the Chesapeake Bay, putting her powerful guns to the test before heading to war. In the upper left of this photograph, three shells fired from Turret #3 can be seen streaking through the sky.

The photo was officially released in December 1944, one month after the Mighty Mo had departed for the Pacific War zone.

September 9, 1968. Battleship New Jersey arrives at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, her crew in dress whites on deck as tugs guide her into the channel.

This visit came during her Vietnam-era recommissioning, when she operated as the only battleship on active duty in the world. You can learn more about the battleship's Vietnam service when you visit the ship.
