75 years ago today, Battleship IOWA was recommissioned for Korean War service.

She’d already served through WWII, but when the Korean War broke out the Navy needed her 16-inch guns back in action. She was recommissioned on August 25, 1951, under Captain William R. Smedberg III, and later became flagship of the Seventh Fleet.

Today, she’s docked at the Port of Los Angeles. Come pay her a visit and hear the rest of her story.

Battleship IOWA welcomed several members of the crew of this morning. Staff captain Mario accepted a plaque made of World War II-era teak from IOWA's deck in recognition of the camaraderie between the two ships' crews over the years and of 's support for Freedom of the Seas.

Fair winds, Quantum, as you head for Asia this fall!

Grass is nice. 16-inch guns are better.

Battleship IOWA is more than a historic ship. She’s a living classroom, a gathering place for veterans and military families, and a hub of civic life on the LA Waterfront.

None of that happens without you. Your support helps students discover history, veterans find connection, and our engineering team keep IOWA’s decks open for generations to come.

Today we’re saying thank you: for preserving the past, serving the present, and inspiring the future.
