The University of Warsaw Museum was awarded in the 17th edition of the 'Mazovian Museum Events – Wierzba’ competition.

The University of Warsaw Museum was honoured with the first prize in the OPEN PROJECT category for the 'Collection of life. A spectacular gift to the Museum, Warsaw, Mazovia'.

The Museum also received the second prize, in the EXHIBITION category, for the exhibition 'Janusz Fiszer: Collector".

In the EDUCATIONAL PROJECT category, we were honoured with third place for the project "Museum academic unit as an educational platform for refugees".

PRESIDENTIAL VISIT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW.

On Monday, August 21st, 2023, the University of Warsaw was honored to welcome Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, to our campus.

The visit began with a meeting at the historic Tyszkiewicz-Potocki Palace, the seat of the University of Warsaw Museum. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had the pleasure of meeting with our esteemed Rector, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, along with other distinguished figures who contribute to the university's excellence, including Prof. Sambor Grucza, Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources, Prof. Sławomir Żółtek, Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Teaching, and Robert Gray, Chancellor of the University of Warsaw.

Following this warm exchange, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa delivered a captivating lecture titled "The International Situation: Before, During, & After" in the prestigious Column Hall within the Faculty of History.

During his lecture, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa shared profound insights into the contemporary geopolitical landscape, with a special focus on the ongoing challenges in Ukraine. The presentation offered invaluable perspectives on the post-war world, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to attend.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for gracing us with his wisdom and presence. His visit was a true celebration of academic exchange and global cooperation.

A Peak into Janusz Fiszer’s collection

The Janusz Fiszer collection comprises of multiple exhibits stemming from his collection. In this post, I would like to point out a particular section, highlighting some American history in the form of Bonds, Shares and a group photo of Confederate soldiers in Uniform during the American Civil War.

During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the United States government faced a massive financial burden during the Civil War due to the high costs of raising and maintaining armies, purchasing supplies, and supporting other war-related expenses. To cover these expenses, the government turned to various methods of fundraising, and issuing bonds was one of them.

Bonds were essentially loans from citizens and institutions to the government. These bonds were a means for individuals to lend money to the government and, in return, receive interest payments over time as well as the repayment of the principal amount at a later specified date.

The different types of bonds being issues were the United States Treasury Notes, United States Treasury Certificates of Indebtedness and United States Bonds. Each bond type signified a different type of loan, to be paid back in intervals (the shortest being the United States Treasury Certificates of Indebtedness and the longest being United States Bonds, with the United States Treasury Notes being somewhere in-between).

As seen in two of the images, both bonds were United States Bonds as they required a minimum investment of around $500 to $1000. Due to the fact that bonds were issued with varying interest rates, maturities, and types, it would be difficult to calculate how much that is worth in the modern era.

One of the other images highlights shares issued by a company in the year 1857. Much like today, shares, or stocks, represent ownership in a company. When you buy a share of a company's stock, you become a partial owner of that company. Companies issue stocks as a way to raise capital to grow their business. While the fundamental concept of shares remain consistent, to reflect the technological advancements in society, the way they are bought, sold, regulated, and the information provided on said shares has significantly changed throughout history.

The final image highlights a group photo of Uniformed Soldiers during the Civil War, and during it, both the Union and Confederate forces had distinct military uniforms that evolved over the course of the conflict. Both sides' uniforms went through changes during the war, and soldiers often wore what they could find. The uniforms served as a means of identification on the battlefield and carried symbolic significance for soldiers during a pivotal period in American history.

The 1st of August, 2023 marked the 79th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Just beyond the main gate of the university the University of Warsaw held a commemoration for the historical event.

Professor Zygmunt Lalak PhD held a speech during the commemorations to address the insurgents of the Uprising. Attending as well was Professor Jerzy Gaździcki who is the president of the Association of Soldiers of the Krybar Combat group in the World Association of Home Army Soldiers. Professor Gaździcki was an insurgent who took part in fighting for Warsaw University. During his speech he outlined the historical events that took place during the Uprising.

The commeration was marked by a showing by the University of Warsaw choir performing "Hasło Powiśla", "Warsaw Children", "Michla's Palace" and "Mokotowa March". Songs that became synonymous with the Uprising. Flowers were laid on the plaques dedicated to the insurgents.

Following the workshop held by Monika, we continued the theme of creativity at the Museum with another workshop. This time, we delved into the art of drawing from observation.

With easels set up throughout our museum exhibits, our participants had the unique opportunity to choose their subjects for drawing. Whether it was a taxidermy display or a mural adorning the walls.

The participants artistic skills really showed through their work. Here's a few photos from the workshop.

Following Andrzej's workshop on the basics of archaeological documentation and drawing, we continued our journey of exploration at the museum with another captivating workshop. This time, Monika Dunajko led a workshop on the art of sculpting with clay mold as well as a tour of the University of Warsaw Museum.

Our group began their experience with a tour around the museum's exhibits before gathering in the classroom for the clay sculpting workshop.

Guided by Monika, the attendees had the freedom to express their creativity and mold clay into unique and interesting sculptures.

At the end of the workshop the attendees had made some interesting and unique sculptures.

We are excited to share that one of our colleagues, Andrzej, hosted an engaging workshop on the art of archaeological drawing at the University of Warsaw Museum.

The workshop focused on the process of archaeological documentation and equipped attendees with the essential skills of technical drawing. Under the guidance of Andrzej, each individual had the opportunity to develop their technical drawing skills as well as gain an understanding in the process of measuring for documentation.

With precision measuring tools and Andrzej's instruction, our attendees skilfully rendered their chosen objects, resulting in impressive and accurate drawings.

Jun. 14, 2023 - Book Signing of Stanisław Waltoś

Taking place just before the temporary exhibition hosting 'Janus Fiszer - Collector's', the University of Warsaw Museum was proud to have hosted Stanisław Waltoś promoting his latest work "On the footsteps of Doctor Faust and other sketches".

Conducted by by Paweł Jaskanis, the director of the Museum of King John III's Palace in Wilanów and organized by the Museum of the University of Warsaw and Wolters Kluwer Poland, attendees had the opportunity to converse with Mr. Waltoś during the meeting.

Discussing various subject matters, the conclusion of the event saw Mr. Waltoś signing his newest publication and taking some photos with guests in the main hall of the Museum, located in between the permanent exhibition and the temporary one.

INTRODUCTION

Hello! For those of you who have begun to follow and like our page, this is the official page for the University of Warsaw Museum. Running alongside Muzeum Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, we will be posting all events, workshops, exhibitions, etc. taking place at the museum in English.

The two individuals responsible for this page are Yuri Mota Santos (right) and Tyler Price (left). We are two Erasmus students working closely with the Academic Museum of the University of Warsaw to help foster and broaden the relationship between non-Polish speakers to help bring attention to the Museum and what it offers.

We hope that you will enjoy the content that we post on this page and begin garnering interest in the Museum and its various events & exhibits.
