Museums for The Planet
At the University of Warsaw Museum exhibition, we are also presenting selected herbarium specimens from the collections of the Herbarium of the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw. More than a repository of preserved plants, a herbarium serves as a valuable record of environmental change over time. Each specimen tells its own story through the information it carries: where and when it was collected, its scientific name, descriptions of its distinctive features, and a wealth of other details that document both the plant and the environment in which it grew.

Czwartek, 4 czerwca / 4 June Thursday
If objects could speak
“Hello. I am a cork model of the Arch of Constantine the Great.🏛️
I was created at a time when even the triumphal arch of Emperor Constantine was reimagined in miniature — light, portable, and made of cork. Because nothing says ‘empire’ quite like a material usually used to seal bottles.🙂
For years, I stood proudly and motionless at the University of Warsaw, quietly accompanying generations of students learning how to design great architecture.
Today, I live at the University of Warsaw Museum, where life is calm and steady. Every now and then, curators stop by, look at me with a certain seriousness, and tell my story as if I were far more important than I look: that I remember King Stanisław August Poniatowski, survived the partitions of Poland, both World Wars, witnessed Frédéric Chopin, and saw countless generations of students pass through.
And I simply stand here, quietly thinking that - for a piece of cork - I’ve had quite an extraordinary journey.”😍

Wednesday 3 June
On this day, we honour the memory of Józef Rotblat, who in 1938 earned his PhD in physics from the University of Warsaw. A physicist and committed peace advocate, he took part in the Manhattan Project before making a historic decision to withdraw from research on nuclear weapons on moral grounds - the first scientist to do so. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.

Tuesday 2 June
Museums × AI: Futures
Did AI really come up with this? What do you think?
In 30 years, the University of Warsaw Museum will be a “layer of reality” - something between an archive, a simulation game, and the living memory of the city.
The Tyszkiewicz-Potocki Palace will still stand, but only as a “gateway.” Once inside, visitors will not enter traditional exhibition rooms, but a system that reconfigures space in real time. Walls respond to presence, and rooms “shift” between eras: one moment you are in a 19th-century salon, the next in a post-war lecture hall, and then in a futuristic University of Warsaw campus that has never existed - but could.
The museum operates like a living simulator of the University of Warsaw’s history. Visitors can assume roles: a student from 1869, a protest participant, a rector making key decisions, or even a completely fictional character generated by the system to serve the narrative. Every choice reshapes the story - history is learned through lived experience.
Moreover, the University of Warsaw Museum would no longer be confined to Earth. Part of its collection could exist in digital and orbital space - a distributed archive of data accessible from anywhere in the world, and even beyond it.
In this vision, the University of Warsaw Museum would no longer be a place to visit, but an experience to co-create - fluid, personal, and never quite the same twice.

As every year, we are taking part in the campaign. Throughout the week, we will share stories from the University of Warsaw Museum with you.
In line with today’s theme, “Museums × AI: State of Play,” we present information about the University of Warsaw Museum generated by ChatGPT - naturally subject to light editing. The English name of the Muzeum Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego is „University of Warsaw Museum”. And why Chat produced an English name in response to a Polish prompt - only Chat knows!
