With support from the Olga Hocka-Krywonos & Yaroslav Repecha Memorial Scholarship and the Wasyl, Tekla, Darka & Lydia Karabin Fund, Dariyan Dubik began a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Dariyan’s research explores the composition, harmony, and history of Ukrainian Catholic chant, with the hope of sharing that knowledge with Ukrainian sacred music communities in Canada after graduation.

This is what investing in Ukrainian Canadian artists and scholars makes possible: deeper study, wider perspectives, and knowledge that returns to strengthen cultural life here.

The Shevchenko Foundation bids farewell to its Executive Director, Bohdana Bashuk, who will soon begin her well-deserved retirement.

Bohdana joined the TSF management team in 2013 and was appointed Executive Director in 2019. With her extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector in culture and heritage, Bohdana understood the challenges our artists and community face in preserving our heritage here in Canada.

She focused on growing TSF, strengthening its operations, and spearheading many new programs to broaden its reach.

One of her first challenges was navigating the pandemic, during which she implemented programs designed to help significantly impacted community organizations and artists remain connected.

The war against Ukraine prompted another pivot to help our community create a safe and welcoming environment for the many Ukrainian newcomers to Canada.

With our 60th anniversary, she guided the organization into a new decade of growth with a refreshed brand.

Despite the constantly changing environment, Bohdana remained focused on strengthening existing and building new partnerships, refining processes to improve transparency and efficiency, and exploring untapped markets for the Ukrainian Canadian story.

“Bohdana leaves a markedly different organization thanks to her dedication, inclusive management style, and unwavering belief in the power of our culture to unite. During her tenure, our funding capacity has more than doubled, our audience has grown exponentially, and our message has been amplified tenfold,” stated TSF President Boris Balan.

TSF is profoundly grateful for Bohdana’s legacy of compassion and impact.

Today, Ukrainians around the world mark 35 years since Ukraine renewed its independence.

Even as Russia’s genocidal war continues, Ukraine’s spirit, identity, and culture endure. As Ukrainian Canadians, we carry both a privilege and a responsibility: to preserve and share Ukrainian culture, to protect it from erasure, and to stand firmly with Ukraine.

We remember the lives tragically lost, honour the defenders protecting Ukraine’s future, and thank all Canadians who continue to stand with the Ukrainian people.

May Ukraine’s courage and cultural resilience continue to unite and inspire us.

Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes! 🇺🇦

A short story can be one chapter in a much larger creative journey.

In 2021, Adrian Lysenko won the Emerging Writers Short Prose Competition for Carpathian Spruce, a story later published in The Walleye. His creative work continued with Five Stalks of Grain, a graphic novel written by Adrian and illustrated by Ivanka Theodosia Galadza, which was later shortlisted for the Kobzar Book Award.

Emerging Ukrainian Canadian writers need opportunities to be heard, developed, and recognized. Sometimes, one story is only the beginning.

The 2026 Emerging Writers Short Prose Competition is now accepting original fiction and nonfiction exploring the Ukrainian Canadian experience.
