Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

At Seven Oaks House Museum and Ross House Museum, we are proud to be stewards not only of two historic homes built by families of Scottish-Métis heritage, but of the many Indigenous artefacts within our museum collections.

For National Indigenous History Month, we are spotlighting a few special Indigenous artifacts on display in Seven Oaks House. Once owned by the Scottish-Métis Inkster family, this cradleboard or Tikinagan represents the thoughtful ingenuity of Indigenous childcare.

Ross House is open for the season!🏡☀️

This summer, visit Ross House: home to the first official Post Office in Western Canada and one of Winnipeg's founding Métis families.

Join us for drop-in guided tours of the restored Red River frame home, now located in the heart of Point Douglas. Step back in time to the early days of Winnipeg, and learn how the people who lived here helped shape it!

Our Doors are Opening this weekend! 🏡🚪

We are opening up for the season for Doors Open Winnipeg! At Ross House, immerse yourself in the history of early Manitoba. Built in 1854 for William and Jemima Ross, the restored Red River frame home was not only home to an extremely influential Métis family, but also to the first official Post-Office of Western Canada!

Visit Ross House for our first event of the season: Doors Open Winnipeg! 🏡🚪

Ross House is one of the oldest homes in Winnipeg, and served as the first official Post Office in Western Canada. It was built in 1854 for William and Jemima Ross, members of a prominent Métis family. Their carefully restored log home offers visitors an immersive look into daily life in early Manitoba.

We are proud to be stewards of two historic homes which were saved through becoming museums. Both Seven Oaks House and Ross House couldn’t exist today without the community, civic, and provincial efforts to restore, preserve, and operate the oldest homes in Winnipeg as museums🏡

200 years ago, an ice jam broke on the Red River, causing the most devastating flood recorded in Manitoba history.

Alexander Ross recorded the 1826 flood in his book 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘥 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. After an exceptionally cold and snowy winter, a rapid thaw paired with heavy rain caused ice jams and swelling upstream. On May 2nd, Alexander Ross wrote how the water rose nine feet in 24 hours, and by May 5th, many settlers abandoned their homes for shelter on higher ground.

The 1826 flood decimated the Red River Settlement, peaking at 11 meters above normal level and claiming all homesteads and several lives. Only three churches and a grist mill remained standing. By May 23, the flood began to subside, and, in time, the Red River Settlement was rebuilt.

Before the flood, Alexander Ross was building a home in Red River Settlement awaiting the arrival of his wife Salis (“Sarah”) and their children from the Okanagan Valley. When Salis arrived after traversing the country with her four children, the flood destroyed the home Alexander had prepared. They would eventually rebuild their home known as Colony Gardens on the same plot of land where Ross House originally stood.
