TWO JOB OPPORTUNITIES
INTERPRETIVE GUIDE AND CURATORIAL ASSISTANT

• Ukrainian Museum of Canada, UWAC, Manitoba Branch, is located at 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2W 3S4. The Museum, founded in 1950, cultivates the diverse knowledge and appreciation of the experiences, cultures, and histories of Ukrainians in Canada, Ukraine, and the diaspora. The Museum is a safe and welcoming place for all individuals.

Details of our activity are described in our website www.umcmb.ca. The Museum is incorporated in the Province of Manitoba and is a registered, non-profit charity with Canada Revenue.

Primary Responsibilities of the Museum Interpretive Guide are:

• Guiding individual/group tours through the Museum and educating visitors about the history of Ukrainians in Canada and the diaspora. You will be expected to be at the Museum during the Museum’s summer hours.
• English language required and Ukrainian language would be an asset.
• Providing visitor service and a positive experience for guests.
• Gift shop duties.
• Answering the phone, responding to questions related to the Museum and redirecting calls.
• Social media management/contribution
• Performing start-of-day and end-of-day tasks such as security protocols, and leaving the Museum in good order.

Primary responsibilities of the Curatorial Assistant are:

• Assisting with curatorial, collections management and research projects.
• Assist with display and storage of artifacts to ensure proper conservation methods.
• Assist with researching origins and provenance of artifacts.
• Develop story lines and themes in order to help organize displays and exhibits, including online exhibits.
• Assist in producing and disseminating promotional
materials using digital technology.
• English language and some fluency in the Ukrainian
language required.
• Maintain security during open hours and follow security protocols when leaving.

Competencies/Experience

• Must be between the ages of 15 and 30, and meet all other eligibility criteria for the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Must be a PERMANENT RESIDENT.

Employment is seasonal from: July 1, 2026 through to
August 30, 2026 subject to approval of the Canada
Summer Jobs Program.

The work schedule is 30 hours/week at $16.50/hour. The Museum is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

PRYKRASY - ADORNMENTS, SUMMER EXHIBIT 2026
In January 2024, the Museum undertook a project to restore valuable korali (coral necklaces) in our collection, some dating from the 1800s. Restoration needed to be done since the korali were either broken or too fragile to display in their present condition. Supported by grants from the The Shevchenko Foundation and Steinbach Credit Union, Oleksandra Berdnyk, a new Ukrainian Canadian experienced in appraising and restoring korali following authentic traditional methods, is giving a second life to the Museum’s korali so that they can be researched, displayed, appreciated by visitors to our Museum and shared by digital means on our website. These korali will be featured in our 2026 summer exhibit supported by the SUS Foundation, The Shevchenko Foundation, Steinbach Credit Union, and Sports Culture and Heritage. Oleksandra Berdnyk has agreed to curate the summer exhibit and will be doing a presentation on authentic restoration of korali, May 2, 2026. Now, korali have become more desirable than ever as they are protected items in Ukraine and cannot be moved outside of Ukraine.

The Sacred Straw Spider Talisman called a Pavuk, is a traditional handmade geometric straw mobile that was traditionally made during Christmas and winter. It was suspended from the ceiling by long horsehair strands and it was believed to trap negative energy and bring prosperity, blessings and protection to households. These intricately woven, airy structures, and web-like forms are made from harvest straw and reflect the interconnectedness of community and the cycles of life.

WINTER 2025 ISSUE OF PIECEWORK MAGAZINE ON THE NEWS STANDS!

PIECEWORK MAGAZINE , with worldwide readership, requested an article from the Manitoba Branch, Ukrainian Museum of Canada for their fall costume issue. The Museum submitted an article on the ancient vyrizuvannia stitch, with accompanying images of its use on Ukrainian sorochky, (shirts) in the Museum’s collection.

Piecework Magazine is also available through the library.

Visit us in person at 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The Museum is located on the ground floor of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral.

A thank you to Dr. Roman Yereniuk for representing our Museum at the Ukrainian Heritage Consortium of North America in Saskatoon. Dr. Roman and Anastasia joined over 45 delegates, museum professionals and cultural practitioners from across North America for panel discussions, delegate presentations and site visits.
The Manitoba Branch is a volunteer run organization and we value our supporters who are dedicated to preserving and promoting Ukrainian heritage.
