New Arrival: "A Brilliant Moment." 12 x 16 in, Oil. Zhaoming Wu pulls the viewer’s senses through cacophony of color and light toward a single, sharp focus. Figures account for about 80 percent of Wu’s work, he says, with 20 percent landscapes, the reverse of his subjects while he was in China. “For the figure, you need to know anatomy. You cannot make a mistake. But for the landscape, a rock or mountain can be changed. You don’t have to be as accurate. You don’t have to rely on drawing as much as with the figure. For the figure, you need to capture form, gesture.

It’s a challenge and a lot of fun.”Wu finds that painting a landscape from time to time stirs things up, keeps him fresh. He and his wife and 15-year-old daughter, D**g Yi – also an artist – occasionally take painting trips together traveling to Europe and throughout the United States, finding Taos, New Mexico especially appealing. “It reminds me of China,” Wu says. When he isn’t painting, Wu writes poetry or listens to music “to recharge my batteries, he says. “If painting every day, the hand becomes very skillful, but art isn’t just skill. It’s how you think and interpret. Writing open eyes to seeing. The different mediums are all related.” Of course, Wu doesn’t stay away from his easel for long. “I just do what I love,” he says.

"Rush Creek Gathering" by Suzanne Baker. The life and places Suzanne Baker painted were the life and places she had lived since early childhood, when her family located in the Sierra community of Three Rivers, California just outside Sequoia National Park.

The cattle ranchers, horse packers, mountaineers and artists that composed the scant population of steep, high foothill country, were a fascination to her. The stories from the packers and mountaineers of such places as Black Rock Pass, Tyndall Creek, Forester Pass and scores of other places plus their tales of adventures created a life long pursuit of this Sierra Back country. Suzanne’s artist Mother encouraged her children to draw and paint and this became a popular family activity.

Because Suzanne spent many years on horseback riding the high steep mountains surrounding her home, and as a teenager she worked as a packer and guide in the Park- it was natural for her to study Animal Science a Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. There she met her husband Gordon. The Baker family always lived in the ranch country of Nevada and California- where they raised their three children Brett, Hoss, and Jenny. Suzanne's art training came from numerous college art courses and years of independent study.

From Robert McCoy: "Over the years I have explored a variety of subjects and used different methods and materials to illustrate my ideas. It has been an experimental process to determine my path. I’ve found that using still life as a platform is the best way to express myself. Realism is my preference for illustrating those ideas. Western subjects have become my focus. This coincides with family research which has put me back in touch with my roots. I was born in Colorado and grew up in both New Mexico and Texas. Those formative years filled me with a love for the West, and helped to shape my vision. There is an honesty about that subject, and being from early pioneer families legitimizes my involvement. These are the places where stories originated and where the ruins remain. I continually return to these places to feel inspired and rejuvenated. Adding to that resource is a library of books and movies that have influenced me personally, and our culture as a whole. In painting terms I am a “realist”. One art critic described me as a “hyper realist”. My work takes time to produce, because I’m more concerned with quality rather than quantity. I use professional grade materials, and have custom stretchers or panels made for maximum stability. I prepare each surface I paint on by hand to obtain the feel I like, and in the final stages, use glazes to add luminosity. I work from life, not from photographs. Therefore, I continually search for and collect vintage and antique items that can be used for my subjects."
