“A gigantic pseudoscientific diagram referencing how changes in variables over time may appear chaotic, unpredictable, or counterintuitive, in contrast to linear systems,” says Blair Vaughn-Gruler about this new piece, Nonlinear Dynamics.

RISE ABOVE by Blair Vaughn-Gruler. Says the artist, “Like bubbles rising to the surface, Rise Above offers an elevated nonsense.” This painting has a 2″ deep “cradle” (technical term for the edges) that sets it off handsomely.

Beard Guy, new by Jeff Brewer, is the cutest. His beard is a “junkyard finish” patina in enamel over steel ... and it may or may not be a coincidence that his maker also sports a fine beard 🙂 Portrait in Blue, meanwhile, just dons a mask.

Link to purchase Beard Guy in comment!

Gorgeous new Pink Bunny just in from Jeff Brewer! This one has a touch of the artist’s “junkyard finish,” which he achieves by kicking a piece across concrete or throwing it in the back his pickup truck for a few days.

“It’s fun to take a beautiful, smooth surface, and scratch it up,” he says. “There’s an element of mark making in this that I enjoy.”

Drumroll... we’ve moved! We are now in the Siler Rufina Art District, open daily by appointment.

We will miss our incredible friends and neighbors on Canyon Road, but we are also excited to be part of this area of town, which has a long history of working artists and artisans.

We have TWO warehouse spaces, one that exhibits painting and the other sculpture.

Guess who's in town from CO? Jamie Monroe, left, with GVG co-owner Ernst Gruler. These two metal workers have a lot to talk about ;0)

Jamie delivered his latest, one-of-a-kind Wall Bells in forged steel, available for purchase at $350 for smalls, $500 for mediums, various models (and ringing styles) available: http://gvgcontemporary.com/artists/jamie-monroe/

Jamie grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, but his parents had a farmland—where he learned to be handy even as his neighbors played video games in an increasingly suburbanized era. He's still drawn to nature, and he forges his wall bells and sculptures from scrap he finds, often just by scrounging in the river or riverbed. "It's railroad junk and mining junk," says the artist, nodding to old steel piping that became a bell, or a piece of scrapped rebar reshaped to a handle or base. "These industries came through and kind of destroyed the land, so it feels good to take that stuff back and bring it forward."

Happy, happy solstice! Here's some imagery to ... further ... lighten your day.

We like to think of Solstice 2020 as a natural turning point. Here's to solidarity, hope, and progress.

"In this painting there's almost a Tarot care vibe—some archetype being expressed," says Polzin about Mytho-Poetic Reality. "There's a woman with flaming hair next to a juniper, walking through a junkyard, approaching a red mesa with snowy peaks. What does that say to you?"

Despite the ominous elements, this woman is clearly empowered. "There's some kind of altered state this character is in where everything has significance," says the artist. "Everything becomes a symbol and is synchronistic."

Figures often appear alone in expansive wilderness in Polzin's work, suggesting an individualism perhaps necessary in a person's quest to connect with nature and what he considers to be the land's mythos.

This just in... our website is now mobile-friendly, so visit us anytime. Plus, we've added a new feature: blogs by art writer and our gallery manager, Christina Procter (Galerie Managerie).

First up, we take a look at the Mythic Wilderness of Oliver Polzin's new paintings.

Polzin explores our relationship with nature. "Really we're embedded in something so wildly beyond our comprehension," he says.

We want to know... what Jeffie Brewer sculpture makes you smile most? Swipe & like your favs.

Brewer grew up in Palestine of eastern Texas, where his father ran a junkyard on the side of a dusty, two-lane highway. "I was never afraid to jump on a piece of machinery or use a tool," he says. "And I was always dumb enough to do it." A kid in cutoff shorts and worn-out Vans, he grew up climbing on piles of steel, cutting and torching it to smaller pieces to be sold off as scrap. "Working with metal is kind of ingrained in my blood," he says.

These sculptures are enamel over steel, and some have Brewer's "junkyard finish" with intentional rust and abrasion. We can't wait to see the votes come in!

A moving story about how Kaline Carter was compelled to make art by a woman who inspired many and saw his talent.

See his latest New York series here, part of our Ephemeral exhibition: http://gvgcontemporary.com/exhibitions/ephemeral/

In this episode, Kaline opens up about his experience being the single gay kid in a conservative American town. He goes into detail about his need to be accepted and respected by his peers. Kaline found art as an outlet early-on but found it difficult to give himself over to his passion fully. This....
