A Quiet Grace

There is something in the eyes that holds you.

In Kathy Piccione’s St. Bernadette, emotion lives in the smallest details. Her gaze carries a quiet depth, at once tender, contemplative, and remarkably present. It is a quality Kathy brings so beautifully to her portraiture: the ability to make an expression feel less like something observed and more like something felt.

Around her, color creates its own gentle radiance. A luminous turquoise halo emerges against the deep, star-speckled blue, while the soft blush of roses brings warmth to the composition. Hummingbirds hover delicately around her, tiny flashes of movement and color that lend the painting an almost ethereal sense of life.

Remembering Dolly

Some people leave behind more than a legacy. They leave behind a little more light in the world.

We join so many others in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, an extraordinary artist whose music and unmistakable spirit touched generations. Behind the rhinestones, the humor, and that legendary voice was a woman remembered just as deeply for her kindness, generosity, and the joy she gave so freely to others.

Her passing feels especially close to our hearts at Victory Contemporary. Poteet Victory had the privilege of meeting Dolly during her life, and she became a collector of his work—a small connection to someone whose presence reached so remarkably far.

Today, Terry Victory’s Diamond Dust Dolly feels a little different. That familiar smile seems to hold something more: a reminder of the warmth, wit, strength, and radiance that made Dolly so singularly beloved.

The world is a little quieter without her in it, but what she gave us will continue to sing.

From all of us at Victory Contemporary, our deepest condolences go out to Dolly’s family, friends, and the countless people who loved her.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. You will always be loved.

A Quiet Strength

There is something powerful about the stillness of Between Earth & Sky.

Ray Tigerman places a solitary buffalo against broad bands of turquoise and violet, beneath a sky alive with textured white and blue. But it is the buffalo itself that holds the eye. Ray builds its form through unexpected layers of brilliant turquoise, deep indigo, violet, fiery orange, and red, allowing color to define the animal as much as shape.

That abstraction gives the buffalo an almost elemental presence. It feels solid and grounded, yet composed of the same vivid energy as the landscape surrounding it. There is strength here without aggression, solitude without loneliness—a soft, bold serenity that seems to settle over the entire painting.

Between Earth & Sky is unmistakably Ray Tigerman: expressive color, rich texture, and a familiar Western presence transformed into something entirely his own.

Where the Light Breaks Through

There are paintings that capture a landscape, and others that seem to hold the feeling of standing within one.

Poteet Victory’s newest work, Through the Pass, glows from the inside out. A brilliant field of gold rises into fiery orange and deep, earthen reds, while dark, sweeping forms reach inward from either side. Between them, a passage opens, drawing the eye toward that luminous space beyond.

The painting feels elemental and alive. Heat seems to radiate from the canvas, while Poteet’s layered color and expressive marks create a sense of depth that shifts the longer you stand before it. There is movement here, but also invitation—a feeling of being pulled forward toward whatever waits beyond the pass.

A Little Wild at Heart

There is a wonderful sense of personality in Kathy Piccione’s newest arrivals.

In Ty-Coon and Trickster, two familiar characters of the wild become something delightfully unexpected. A raccoon sits almost perfectly composed, wrapped in extravagant layers of electric blue and turquoise, while a coyote turns with that unmistakable look of curiosity, intelligence, and perhaps just a little mischief.

And, as always with Piccione’s work, the eyes have it.

There is a remarkable life behind each gaze. Warm, expressive, and full of character, they transform these animals from subjects into personalities, as though each has a story they are deciding whether or not to share.

Piccione pushes their natural colors into something more vivid and playful. Brilliant blues meet flashes of gold, turquoise, and fiery orange, giving both paintings an energy that feels perfectly at home within The Color of August.

A New Voice in the West

The stories of the West are always evolving, shaped by the people who continue to find something meaningful beneath its endless skies.

Victory Contemporary is delighted to welcome Matt Shumaker to the gallery.

Raised in California’s Central Valley among cattle ranches, cotton fields, country roads, and the people who made their lives from the land, Shumaker developed an early connection to the imagery and mythology of the American West. Storytelling has followed him throughout a life that has moved through film, education, music, and ministry, eventually finding its way onto canvas.

That history gives his paintings a wonderful sense of familiarity without feeling bound to the past.

In Kennedy, Loveland, and Trinity, bold shapes and expressive color transform horses, riders, desert landscapes, and open country into something distinctly his own. There is warmth in these paintings, but also movement and personality—a contemporary vision carrying the enduring spirit of the West forward.

We are thrilled to introduce Matt Shumaker’s work to Victory Contemporary and to begin sharing his stories with our collectors.

His first paintings have arrived, and something tells us they are only the beginning.

A Study in Blue

There is something magnetic about the stillness of Frida in Blue.

Kathy Piccione surrounds her subject in an extraordinary depth of blue, moving from luminous turquoise into rich cobalt and midnight tones. Against it, the warmth of the face seems almost illuminated from within, glowing in gold, amber, and orange. The contrast is striking, yet there is a quietness to the painting that keeps drawing you closer.

And then there is the gaze.

Steady, assured, and impossible to ignore, it gives Frida in Blue a presence far beyond the canvas. Piccione allows color and expression to carry the emotion of the work, creating a portrait that feels both powerful and deeply intimate.

Frida in Blue is currently available at Victory Contemporary, but works with this kind of presence rarely remain simply part of the room. They wait for the person who feels that same pull.

Where the Noise Falls Away

There are paintings that command a room, and others that seem to quiet it.

Ray Tigerman’s Peace Pipe does both.

Set against a field of deep, resonant blue, the work carries an unexpected stillness. The richness of the color draws you inward, while the drifting smoke and small bursts of color seem almost suspended in the space around him. There is strength here, but no urgency. A sense that, for a moment, everything else has fallen away.

It is a fitting feeling for the days after Indian Market, when Santa Fe begins to exhale and the extraordinary energy of the weekend settles into memory.

Many of Tigerman’s works found their homes over the past few days, making the pieces that remain feel all the more special. Peace Pipe is among them, and one we suspect may not remain on our walls for long.

The crowds may have gone, but The Color of August remains.

Still Burning Bright

Indian Market may be entering its final day, but the color inside Victory Contemporary hasn’t quieted.

Ray Tigerman’s remaining works still carry the unmistakable energy that has defined this weekend — saturated blues, electric greens, flashes of orange, and the bold silhouettes that give his paintings their sense of movement and spirit.

Across these pieces, Tigerman moves between strength and stillness, ceremony and landscape, allowing color to become its own kind of language. Each work feels immediate from across the room, yet the closer you stand, the more texture, gesture, and detail begin to emerge.

Several of Ray’s paintings have already found their homes this weekend, and the gallery walls are beginning to change with them.

On this final day of Indian Market, there is still time to experience the remaining collection in person and see why his work has drawn so much attention throughout the weekend.
