In 2001, Poteet Victory was commissioned by the University of Oklahoma to paint a mural to honor all Indian tribes who were forced from their homelands. The original 16' x 52' 'Trail of Tears' mural was broken down into three separate panels. The panels, from left to right, represent the birth, the death and the rebirth of the Indian people. The University of Oklahoma ultimately rejected the mural amid controversy due to the imagery depicted in the middle panel.
