For this week's movie, we hope you will enjoy "James Drake: Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash) | Blanton Museum of Art"

Debuting at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, "James Drake: Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash)" represents the culmination of two consecutive years of active creation by the Texas native, now Santa Fe-based artist. Committing to draw every day for two years starting in 2012, Drake devised a disciplined yet flexible production system that resulted in an astonishing 1,242 individual drawings depicting wild animals, landscapes, studies of human anatomy, scientific formulas, and representations of classical art and family photographs, among other subjects. Together, they comprise a monumental installation revealing his most enduring preoccupations and references – from communication and culture to violence and addiction. This exhibition, which was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and debuted there [in summer 2015], [was] on view at the Blanton Museum of Art October 19, 2014 through January 4, 2015.

"James Drake: Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash)" was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and was made possible by generous lead underwriting support from Tami and Michael Lang, and corporate underwriting from The San Diego County BMW Centers. Additional funding has been received from Stephen Feinberg.

This video is produced by the Blanton Museum of Art. Studio footage courtesy of William Gunter. Interview footage and editing by Mary Myers, Blanton Museum of Art. Interview conducted at the Blanton Museum of Art, April 2014, by Ray Williams, Director of Education and Academic Affairs.

James Drake (b. 1946, Texas) characterizes himself as a narrative artist, albeit one who is more interested in vignettes and fragments than in storytelling. He is an astoundingly versatile artist, who has managed to create accomplished distinctive work in a number of media. Through his drawings, video, sculpture, photography, and installations, Drake has explored the human condition, specifically its emotions and its borders, both material and metaphysical. About the artist, Kathryn Kanjo, chief curator and head of the curatorial department at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego writes, “He defies a ready, singular style. Instead, Drake maps a space of humanity toggling between the languages of physics and poetry, illustrated by images of current events and cultural history.”

Drake's work is in the permanent collections of over thirty museums, including the Albright-Knox Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

James Drakes lives and works in Santa Fe, NM. His solo exhibition "James Drake: Tongue-Cut Sparrows" is now on view through September 28th!

Using images of the artist and extensive footage of her work, this film, by Dale Schierholt, profiles the art-and persona-of sculptor Louise Nevelson. Through the artist's own words, and those of individuals who knew her intimately, the viewer is allowed a fresh look at the ground-breaking art-and thought-which helped to redefine sculpture in the twentieth century.

"The film exposes the viewer to the essence of my grandmother's artistic philosophy and challenges them to make a real exploration of the work itself. Dale stayed committed to his pledge to examine her art, not her celebrity."

"Each day men and women congregate on the streets below the jails in different cities throughout the world in an effort to communicate with their incarcerated friends and loved ones. They do not speak with words but have invented a simple and effective sign language using their arms and hands.

"Even though this form of communication is usually on a public street it has a very private aspect to it, and is ultimately more personal and immediate.

"As might be expected, most of the signing deals with family matters and local gossip, however, I asked if they could sign William Shakespeare, Alighieri Dante, William Blake, as well as contemporary writers, Cormac McCarthy, Benjamin Saenz, and Jimmy Santiago Baca. Not only were they very receptive to the idea, they were instrumental in choosing certain passages and works that exemplified their love and loss and desperate need to communicate."

In stark black and white, a woman stands with one hand folded purposely over another. Another woman, face dappled in shadow, looks upward with longing at something we, as viewers, cannot see. A flock of ghostly black sparrows are ringed by an elaborate, old-fashioned frame design. Elsewhere hands flex and flare into a gesture of wings.

Photographs. Drawings. Video. Text. James Drake’s Tongue-Cut Sparrows is a massive undertaking, bringing together an astonishing range of arts media, created and developed over the course of 30 years (and still ongoing). As with so much of Drake’s work, this series has its origins in the borderlands of El Paso, where he lived and worked for decades. The project was sparked in 1994 by curiosity over witnessing a group of people (mostly women) gathered outside of the El Paso County Jail, moving, gesturing, and signing up toward the prison. He asked a friend about what was happening and discovered that these were family, friends, and lovers of prisoners, using an invented language of signs and gestures to communicate to their loved ones over distance, and without having to submit to the timetables, strictures, limitations, and scrutiny of official prison visits.

Through the years exhibitions of works from Tongue-Cut Sparrows have occurred all over the world, from the Venice Biennale in 2009 to the Albright Knox in 2011 and galleries in New York, Texas, and elsewhere. Following this exhibition at Charlotte Jackson Fine Art in Santa Fe, there are multiple more exhibitions planned, including for SITE Santa Fe in 2026 and a collaborative performance piece at Carnegie Hall in October of this year.

Drake’s unique and diverse assemblage of art (artifacts?), in many media, drops us into the middle of a dialogue, a story. We are in the position of the outsider – like a prison guard at the El Paso jail, or a random passerby on the sidewalk – witnessing a language for which we don’t have the knowledge of grammar or syntax, let alone vocabulary. With Drake’s work we are presented with a symbolic and metaphoric expression, articulating itself in multiple forms, numerous media, or perhaps more accurately – in multiple gestures. Painting, video, photography, poetry. Each is a part of a whole message: a love letter, a documentary, an essay of social anthropology, a novel. We are invited into this unknown, yet deeply human and familiar world, to translate for ourselves a deep and multifaceted story.
