“I’m not lost, for I know where I am.
However, where I am may be lost.”
Winnie-the-Pooh
“The world of “The Hundred Acre Wood” is a world of childhood innocence. It is a mystery without menace, of the wide-eyed exploration of existence wherein each turn can be eagerly anticipated. At the easel, the window of my canvas is my ‘Hundred Acre Wood’.” -FB

The Melody of Colour by Frank Balaam and Still Life and Life in Motion by Angus
Friday, May 22, 4-6p.m.
Frank Balaam has always brought musical attributes to his paintings of forests. One doesn’t just see his works. They seem to make their own inner melodies as viewers enjoy the multi-sensory aspects of his high-chroma, high-texture oil paintings. The paintings in his new show, “the Melody of Colour,” take viewers to sylvan concert halls in which the music is an internal accompaniment to the visual splendor in every Balaam painting.

Angus is known for introducing carefully placed optical refractions to still life painting. Together with joyous color and mood elevating subjects, these have made him a standout in the 3,500-year history of still lifes. For his upcoming show, “Still Life and Life in Motion,” Angus has added a greater-than-expected number of landscape paintings. Vivid colors, unique compositional riffs, and scenes that you’ll want to walk into make his landscapes as irresistible as his still lifes.

Blue Rain in Wilfred’s Wood
Oils on Canvas, 40” x 30”
by Frank Balaam

“I paint with heavy impasto in part because I want my art to have substance beyond that of a two-dimensional image and I feel that the final brushstrokes of distant light must have tangible existence on the surface of the canvas in order to draw attention to the density of air. With this in mind, I fill each speck of unpainted canvas with colour and in “Blue Rain” my colour choice is a pale, gray blue.

When viewing the finished canvas, this blue is at first unnoticed, yet on closer examination of the painting, it is seen and acts as a form of unity for the entire composition, falling throughout like a gentle rain of blue light.”

Forest and Sky Counterpoint
Oils on Canvas, 36” x 36”
by Frank Balaam

“In “Forest and Sky Counterpoint”, I paint the earth and forest with small individual brushstrokes whereas the sky is painted in linear bands of colour swirling as if the viewer is standing in the depths of a darkening forest alongside a river of light. I felt that this counterpoint calls attention to the place where the earth and sky meet, where the rooted trees begin to soar into the heavens.” -FB
