Ventana Fine Art proudly announces a showing of new paintings by Javier Barbosa and contemporary totems by Cassidy Watt. Javier Barbosa’s unique manipulations of color, texture, and surface interest create complex paintings that entice the eye from a distance and yield new discoveries on closer inspection. A master of non-objective visual invention, Barbosa opens wide the gates of imagination and wonder.
Cassidy Watt creates unique, luminous, contemporary totems. Watt’s totems are feasts of light, color, and pattern composed of individually patinated copper and brass rectangles and mounted on birch or maple. Watt controls the oxidative process in unfamiliar ways to create intricate and astonishing patterns and colors, then seals the metals with marine varnish to preserve the effects indefinitely. His totems work individually or in groupings each client is free to design, from duos and trios to whole-wall arrangements.
Meet Barbosa and Watt at Ventana’s Indian Market opening reception on Friday, August 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. The show runs through September 4, with representation ongoing.

Cassidy Watt’s manipulation of metals combines a variety of techniques. It begins with an experimental phase, as the medium – copper or brass – reveals its resistance or obeisance to various applications of patina, torch or hammer. Mr. Watt employs formulas developed through experimentation as well as by accident to apply chemical fuming, resist processing and acid pickling to the metal. Scourged, scorched and scarified, the various results can be juxtaposed into a vertical totem form to create confrontations of reaction and resolution.

At show openings I’m often asked “Which is your favorite?” Usually that’s not a question I can answer. I believe every single painting is successful. If I it wasn’t it would still be in my studio, not on the gallery wall. However, for a very personal reason, I can honestly say this painting is the favorite from my recent body of work. Lately I’ve been working toward a looser, more painterly approach to handling oils. “Above The Reservoir” exemplifies that less literal, more intuitive technique. It’s my favorite.
