Pair of Oil Paintings on Slate, Italy, Early 17th Century
“Christ in the Garden” (Slides 1-5)
This depiction of Christ in the Garden represents the night Jesus Christ prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane just before his arrest and crucifixion. In this painting, Christ is visited in a blaze of heavenly light by an angel carrying a chalice.
Mother of Sorry “Mater Dolorosa” (Slides 6-8)
This depiction of the Virgin Mary as the Mother of Sorrows (Latin: Matera Dolorosa) reflects her spiritual martyrdom and deep maternal grief. She is depicted with a dagger in her heart, against a deeply shadowed, dark background, isolating her figure in the depth of her emotional pain.
Both works are attributed to an Italian master from the early 17th century, likely in the area of Verona. They are exceptionally well preserved and in good condition.
