Society Of Illustrators

Society Of Illustrators The mission of the Society of Illustrators is to promote the art and appreciation of illustration, its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education.
(254)

On February 1, 1901 a group of nine artists and one advising businessman founded the Society, and by 1939 the Society had moved to its current headquarters in an 1875 carriage house located at 128 East 63rd Street. In 1981 the Museum of American Illustration was established which now features the art of such legendary artists as Rockwell, Pyle, Wyeth, Kent, Peak, Fuchs and Holland, as well as contemporary artists. In 2012 the Society received the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and created the MoCCA gallery in the second floor. Since then the Society has exhibited works by legendary artists Arnold Roth, Bill Griffith, and Harvey Kurtzman. The Society is also proud to now host the annual MoCCA Arts Festival.

06/19/2021

This week, Juneteenth was officially established as a national holiday. This day marks the 156th anniversary of Juneteenth, a celebration of Black liberation in the U.S. and a story about freedom, persistence and joy. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on this date in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and months after the end of the Civil War, slaves were finally liberated when General Grainger declared all enslaved people to be free.⠀

We thank the many people who have fought to make this day a national holiday, including Opal Lee, who in 2016, at the age of 86, walked 2.5 miles each day throughout the United States in an effort to encourage lawmakers to declare the national holiday, and to commemorate the 2.5 years it took for enslaved people to learn they were free.⠀

For many of us, this holiday is a day of reflection. It is also an important day for education. If you are interested in learning more about Juneteenth and want to share this knowledge with your family, we recommend reading the book Juneteenth for Mazie (Capstone Young Readers) written and illustrated by Floyd Cooper. ⠀

@floyd.cooper.4 is an award winning children’s book illustrator who has created memorable pictures for nearly 100 titles, several of which he also wrote, including Jump!: From the Life of Michael Jordan, Willie and the All-Stars,The Ring-Bearer, and Max and the Tag-Along Moon (all Philomel). He received a Coretta Scott King Award for The Blacker the Berry by Joyce Carol Thomas (Amistad), and three of his titles were Coretta Scott King Honor books. Among his other honors are two NAACP Image Award nominations, a Jane Addams Peace Honor, and the Simon Wiesenthal Gold Medal. Floyd has exhibited in our The Original Art Exhibit, an annual exhibit created to showcase illustrations from the year’s best children’s books, and was a juror for The Original Art Exhibit in 2020. ⠀

ANOTHER GLOWING REVIEW GF Willmetts review for SFcrowsnest: "Just when I thought I had a decent selection of Frank Frazetta artbooks, I couldn’t resist pulling an over-size hardback on the subject. What does make it stand out is seeing Frazetta’s preliminary designs and a habit of repainting or improving the original paintings sent to various publishers which makes this book unique and of interest to artists. It should be reassuring that even the best is never satisfied with his work and capable of doing the same piece over. If you want to see Frazetta’s art at a large size without necessarily pulling art prints, then this is a good option. 9 years after his death, Frazetta is still the benchmark to equal and even he tried to out-do himself."

17 years ago I did a comic book series entitled "NIA" (KNEE-uh) about an African American pre teen growing up in New York. Some months back SOI did a illustrative series on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the Upper West Side. It inspired me to do a brief series on what the impact this pandemic might had on someone like Nia. How did her effect her family, friends, school, etc. Here is the first of six pages from that series.
