Society Of Illustrators

Society Of Illustrators In 2012 the Society received the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and created the MoCCA gallery in the second floor.

The mission of the Society of Illustrators is to promote the art and appreciation of illustration, its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education. On February 1, 1901 a group of nine artists and one advising businessman founded the Society, and by 1939 the Society had moved to its current headquarters in an 1875 carriage house located at 128 East 63rd Street. In 1981 t

he Museum of American Illustration was established which now features the art of such legendary artists as Rockwell, Pyle, Wyeth, Kent, Peak, Fuchs and Holland, as well as contemporary artists. Since then the Society has exhibited works by legendary artists Arnold Roth, Bill Griffith, and Harvey Kurtzman. The Society is also proud to now host the annual MoCCA Arts Festival.

Join Jess Ruliffson in conversation with Bryan Doerries and Peter Catapano as they discuss Invisible Wounds, Jess’ new comics journalism project which is based on candid, compassionate graphic interviews with returning war vets from the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The event will take place on Wednesday, November 30 from 6:30-8:30pm. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Get tickets here: https://societyillustrators.org/event/invisible-wounds/

More about the book:
Cartoonist Jess Ruliffson spent five years traveling across the country interviewing veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, from kitchen tables in Georgia and libraries in New York City to dive bars in Mississippi and back porches in Vermont. What she finds is that the real experience of soldiers at war is a far cry from depictions in popular media like Zero Dark Thirty or American Sniper. In these illustrated interviews, Ruliffson shares the stories of men, women, and non-binary ex-soldiers who struggle to reconcile their wartime experiences with their postwar lives. Identity lies at the heart of these stories, as they grapple with their gender, their race, and the brutality they’ve witnessed and caused. In this compassionate, probing book, Ruliffson reveals how America’s endless entanglement in wars have affected the psyches of the people who wage them.

The Society of Illustrators and present an informative and inspiring talk with acclaimed author/illustrator, . Following the event there will be an exciting Key Colors Picture Book Competition announcement and Insider Scoop!

About the Special Event
Creating a children’s book is a team work with three parts involved (publisher, author and illustrator) and their communication channels (manuscript, sketches and illustrations). Communication between them is key in the creative process of a children’s book. The book will be honed during its creation: if communication works, the final book will be the best it can be!

Meet José Fragoso, author and illustrator from Madrid. He will share his experience and picture book publications both in the USA and in Europe. José will talk about visual storytelling and what is important, what’s not so much. What is accepted, what maybe not. How communication works and the channels that are used when creating a children’s book, the difference between publishers big and small, European and American. After José shares his advice based on his experience, participants are encouraged to ask questions.

Good for all illustrators interested in writing picture books.
