β€œIn contrast to the fierce heroines she frequently embodies on the silver screen, her creations on canvas are tender, raw and soft. The works depict her own family members, rendered with broad brushstrokes, standing in a park as though pausing for a traditional family portrait, or intimate couples embracing and kissing.”

In 𝘚𝘡𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 π˜ͺ𝘯 𝘡𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘯 and 𝘏𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘭𝘒𝘴𝘴, Liu’s parents appear in compositions that are more linear, graphic, and marked by restraint and reduction. In 𝘏𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘭𝘒𝘴𝘴, a faint imprint of her maternal grandparents emerges behind them. Liu attributes this visual language to her process of recollection, in which memories are distilled to their core and her parents are understood as young individuals with ambitions and lives preceding the formation of the family.

𝘞𝘩𝘒𝘡 𝘚𝘡𝘒𝘺𝘴 and 𝘞𝘩𝘒𝘡 𝘞𝘒𝘴 draw from archival images of Liu’s mother following her immigration to the United States. In these works, the outlined figure of her mother anchors the composition, around which Liu stages encounters between presence and absenceβ€”partial figures, erased companions, and overlapping spaces that evoke what remains alongside what has disappeared. These two works reflects a renewed engagement with family history, shaped in part by the artist’s evolving understanding of motherhood and generational experience.

We are thrilled to share that two works by Pixy Liao () has been acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago! ()

Pixy Liao’s elaborate photography often challenges gender norms and undermines patriarchal stereotypes in a heterosexual relationship in portrayal in media and sexual expression. Her photography attempts to change the way society sees nudity and media through the lens of a whole new perspective. Liao is the grantee of Guggenheim Fellowship, New York in 2026; and recipient of NYFA Fellowship in photography, En Foco’s New Works Fellowship and LensCulture Exposure Awards. She has been awarded artist residencies at the University of Arts London, Pioneer Works, Light Work, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Center for Photography at Woodstock, and Camera Club of New York.

Lucy Liu’s artistic practice spans painting, sculpture, collage, silkscreen, and installation. Her artwork is invariably concerned with notions of security, salvation, and the long-term effects of personal relationships on our physical and emotional selves. She addresses these themes in painting, sculpture, collage, silkscreen, and the appropriation of discarded objects, which Liu re-contextualizes in handmade constructions that function as reliquaries.

Centered on paintings from her ongoing 𝘸𝘩𝘒𝘡 𝘸𝘒𝘴 series, the solo exhibition explores the emotional and psychological terrain of memory, with particular attention to family, cultural inheritance, and the shifting nature of personal history. The title 𝘏𝘒𝘳π˜₯ 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘭π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨𝘴 resists a singular interpretation, pointing instead to the difficulty of feeling itselfβ€”layered, uneven, and at times inaccessible. Liu’s paintings trace this complexity, holding tensions between attachment and distance, forgiveness and compassion, while inviting viewers to reflect on how the past persists in the present.

The exhibition will be on view from May 14-June 6, 2026. Please join us at our opening reception on Thursday, May 14, from 6–8pm!

Wong Weng Cheong: Catch it Outside

Clouds, a recurring motif in Wong Weng Cheong’s Catch it Outside series, appear alongside sharpprecise lines that structure the pictorial space. These rigid forms are set against clouds, which are ephemeral, shifting, and beyond control. As the lines cut through them, ambiguous shapes emerge in the background. In this tension, Wong captures an evanescent moment of disappearance, where clouds dissolve into abstraction. The work lingers in the fleeting space between form and emptiness.
