The Studio Museum in Harlem was founded in 1968 by a diverse group of artists, community activists and philanthropists who envisioned a new kind of museum that not only displays artwork but also supports artists and arts education. In 1979, the New York Bank for Savings gave the Museum the building located at 144 West 125th Street. The Studio Museum in Harlem is internationally known for its catal

ytic role in promoting the works of artists of African descent. The Artist-in-Residence program was one of the Museum’s founding initiatives, and gives the Museum the “Studio” in its name. The program has supported more than one hundred emerging artists of African or Latino descent, many of whom who have gone on to establish highly regarded careers.

Created in 1971, Benny Andrews’s “Trash” reflects the artist’s growing frustration with America’s negligence and violence toward Black communities. Across twelve canvases, several Black men pull symbols of racism, patriotism, and incarceration—confronting the burdens and contradictions embedded in American life.

More than fifty years later, “Trash” continues to offer a powerful lens through which to consider American history, the stories that shape our understanding of the nation, and whose experiences are represented within them.

Experience “A sustained becoming: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2026,” opening on October 1, 2026!

This exhibition showcases the first artist-in-residence cohort in the Museum’s new building. Each artist’s practice demonstrates a distinct approach to figuration, with Derriann Pharr (), Simonette Quamina (), and Taylor Simmons (), working across painting, collage, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media.

Grounded in cultural memory, the works in this exhibition create momentary suspensions in time to imagine what has already transpired and what is yet to come.

Perry and Kiwanga will discuss the creative process behind Kiwanga’s site-specific installation, “BLEED,” and their practice of exploring material histories.
