Established in 1992, Mark Murray Fine Paintings specializes in European and American paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The gallery’s ever-changing collection includes a range of periods and subject matter, including paintings by the French and American Impressionists; Pre-Raphaelites; Hudson River School; Marine paintings by British and Scandinavian artists; Sporting art by British

and American painters including racing and hunting subjects; landscapes by Corot and his followers in Barbizon; exquisite views of Italy and Spain; traditional 19th-century sculpture by Barye, Mêne and others; and a substantial selection of Orientalist paintings by artists such as Gérôme, Weeks, and Bridgman. Although most works date from 1830-1930, there are often exceptions, such as a group of 17th-century Italian drawings, 20th-century marine and sporting works, and several specially chosen contemporary paintings.

Painted circa 1846, this is a view of Janetta Falls (now known as Clinton Falls) in West Milford, New Jersey, the town in which the artist’s wife, Maria, grew up. Cropsey painted at least two similar but much larger views of Janetta Falls also in 1846: Janetta Falls, Passaic County, New Jersey, oil on canvas (24 x 21 inches), is in the collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Janetta Falls, New Jersey, oil on canvas (65 x 48 inches), is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

This painting has been authenticated by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation and will be included in any future supplements to the Catalogue Raisonné of the artist.

The artist describes the subject of this work in an inscription on the reverse: The 74 gun ship "Tonnant" leaving with the fleet from Bermuda to bombard Washington in 1814 (during the war with America). The ships are here shown threading their way between the coral reefs and North Rock. The "Tonnant" was originally a French ship of the line, subsequently captured by Admiral Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and employed in the Napoleonic Wars at the Battle of Trafalgar. Here the H.M.S. "Tonnant" serves as commander Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane's flagship, leading the British Fleet through Bermuda's North Rock channel.

Dawson painted a larger variant of this subject (oil on canvas, 34 x 44 inches), which is in the collection of the Bank of Bermuda.
