Barbara Johnson Zuber’s work is rooted in memory, community, and Black American life. Born in 1926 and raised in Harlem, she became the first woman to graduate from Yale School of Fine Arts. Her paintings turn everyday moments into vibrant scenes full of rhythm, color, and emotion.
In this collage, Zuber depicts children flying kites in her native New York, using bold forms, flattened perspective, and vivid color to evoke a familiar scene filled with movement, play, and community.

A defining figure in American modernism, Milton Avery distilled the visible world into luminous color and quiet form, bridging representation and abstraction in a way that profoundly influenced generations of artists. The four watercolors currently available at VFA, dating from the 1940s and 1950s, capture the breadth of his vision—from serene landscapes to intimate moments of leisure, including a relaxed figure by the sea and a contemplative pool player. Together, these works exemplify Avery’s unique ability to transform everyday scenes into timeless meditations on color, balance, and atmosphere.

Selections from the estate of Jane Piper (1916–1991) trace her evolution from early abstract works—rich in gesture and experimentation—to the refined, quietly contemplative still lifes for which she is best known. Her compositions elevate everyday objects into harmonious studies of color, light, and form, reflecting a distinctly modern and balanced vision.
