Who’s shaping whom? 🌱

In “Coevolution”, author Aslak Aamot Helm traces the evolving relationship between humans and the plant world — from the Neolithic period to the present day. From the first cultivated crops to industrial agriculture and the challenges of climate change, the publication explores how this relationship has shaped our shared history.

He writes: „For thousands of years humans and plants have shaped one another, and it is still not settled who began this. Did people take hold of a chance trait in wild plants, or did the plants use people to carry forward traits that would otherwise have vanished?“

And what might the future hold? The text offers a glimpse into the possibilities ahead, highlighting a heat- and drought-resistant crop that could become increasingly relevant in Northern Europe.🌾

Ernst Schering Preis | Ehemalige Preisträger*innen 1993–2003

Wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen verändern, wie wir die Welt verstehen. Wir blicken zurück auf drei ehemalige Preisträger*innen des Ernst Schering Preises, deren Forschung neue Erkenntnisse über die Entwicklung des Lebens, die Entstehung von Krebs und die Evolution des Menschen ermöglicht hat.

Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard | 1993 | Von der Entwicklungsbiologie bis zum Nobelpreis🧬

Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard gehört zu den prägenden Wissenschaftlerinnen der modernen Entwicklungsbiologie und hat entscheidend dazu beigetragen, die genetischen Grundlagen der Embryonalentwicklung zu entschlüsseln. Für ihre wegweisende Forschung erhielt sie 1993 den Ernst Schering Preis. 1995 wurde sie mit dem Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin ausgezeichnet.

Bert Vogelstein | 1994 | Krebs auf molekularer Ebene verstehen 🔬

Bert Vogelstein hat wesentlich dazu beigetragen, die genetischen Veränderungen zu verstehen, die zur Entstehung von Darmkrebs führen. Seine Forschung zur Molekularbiologie des Kolonkarzinoms eröffnete neue Perspektiven für die Krebsforschung und wurde 1994 mit dem Ernst Schering Preis ausgezeichnet.

Svante Pääbo | 2003 | Was DNA über unsere Evolution verrät 🦴

Svante Pääbo hat mit der Analyse von DNA und seiner Forschung zur Molekulargenetik neue Einblicke in die Evolution des Menschen ermöglicht – unter anderem in die genetische Entwicklung des Geruchssinns. Für seine wegweisende Forschung erhielt er 2003 den Ernst Schering Preis. 2022 folgte der Nobelpreis für Physiologie und Medizin.

The Schering Stiftung Schering Stiftung and Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL) Haus Am Lützowplatz invite you to explore two exhibitions that engage with climate change, landscapes, and possible future scenarios.

The tour begins at the Schering Stiftung with “7 Summers” by Diakron and Emil Rønn Andersen Emil Rønn Andersen. The group will then make its way to Haus am Lützowplatz for the exhibition “On Landscape: Zwischen Eskapismus und Entzauberung”.

Dr. Christina Landbrecht (Schering Stiftung), Dr. Marc Wellmann, and Asja Wolf (HaL) will guide visitors through both exhibitions, bringing different artistic perspectives on climate change, landscapes, and possible future scenarios into dialogue with one another.

In the exhibition by and Emil Rønn Andersen, you will encounter the 1,30-meter-high sculptural plastic of two hands holding a plant. Once the logo of the company’s plant protection division, the Schering Handscarry a piece of its corporate history into the exhibition.

The work connects Schering’s past in the production of pesticides, fungicides, and seed treatment agents with the film’s exploration of plants, science, and changing environments. A symbol from the past brought into the present, where it opens new questions about how we protect, shape, and imagine our environment.🌱

The exhibition “7 Summers” runs until December 6, 2026.

🌾 What might the plants of tomorrow look like?

The sculptural element of the exhibition “7 Summers” shows dried and vacuum-sealed sorghum, a plant native to Southeast Asia and Africa.

More than 4 meters in height, the installation consists of three transparent vacuum-bags filled with sorghum, each covering a window in the project space and preserving the plants as witnesses to the present.

As part of the research project Crops of the Future at the University of Copenhagen Københavns Universitet, biologists are exploring whether this heat- and drought-resistant crop could become established in Central Europe as summers grow hotter.

Die Schering Stiftung sucht vier Berliner Schulen für eine zunächst dreijährige Partnerschaft im Bereich lebenswissenschaftliche Bildung.
Wir unterstützen die ausgewählten Schulen mit einem Bündel von Maßnahmen, das wissenschaftliche Impulse in den Schulalltag bringt und naturwissenschaftliche Bildung nachhaltig stärkt.

🏫 Wer kann sich bewerben?
Alle Berliner Schulen mit gymnasialer Oberstufe – unabhängig von Schulform und Trägerschaft.

🔬 Gesucht werden Schulen, die sich durch besonderes Engagement und/oder Potenzial in der naturwissenschaftlichen, insbesondere biowissenschaftlichen Bildung auszeichnen.

Die Förderung umfasst u. a.:
• Schulvorträge
• Einladungen zu den Preisverleihungen der Stiftung im Bereich Lebenswissenschaften
• finanzielle Förderung von bis zu 2.000 € jährlich pro Schule

Guided Tour and Conversation | September 10, 2026 | 4 pm

What happens when reality, simulation, and speculation overlap?

As part of “7 Summers” and Berlin Art Week Berlin Art Week, the Danish art collective Diakron will discuss their film of the same name with historian and anthropologist Lachlan Summers and curator and theorist Daphne Dragona Daphne Dragona. Together with Aslak Aamot Helm and Bjarke Hvass Kure , they will explore the diverse media-related, aesthetic, and research-based themes addressed in the work.

The conversation will further address the film’s distinctive aesthetic, in which the boundaries between documentary footage and simulated images become blurred.

The program begins with a guided tour of the exhibition with Dr. Christina Landbrecht, together with Emil Rønn Andersen Emil Rønn Andersen and Amitai Romm .
