.38 Special can mean different things to different people. For some, it's the late '70s early '80s band who got their name after rehearsing in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Police responded to the rock and roll racket, and when told a lock couldn't be opened, they allegedly said "That's all right. We'll let this .38 special do the talking". And from that moment, the band who wrote hits such as "Hold on Loosely" and "Teacher, Teacher" was born.
It's also a type of gun that many police organizations used throughout the years. This includes the Winnipeg Police Service, who used a C**t Police Positive .38 Special pictured here for a time. There are several examples of these sorts of weapons on display at the Winnipeg Police Museum, located at 245 Smith St. Come by from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday to see these exhibits.
The .38 special was also seen in many movies and television shows, including the Charles Bronson vigilante classic "Death Wish" from 1974.
