.38 Special can mean different things to different people. For some, it's the late '70s early '80s band who got their name after rehearsing in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Police responded to the rock and roll racket, and when told a lock couldn't be opened, they allegedly said "That's all right. We'll let this .38 special do the talking". And from that moment, the band who wrote hits such as "Hold on Loosely" and "Teacher, Teacher" was born.

It's also a type of gun that many police organizations used throughout the years. This includes the Winnipeg Police Service, who used a C**t Police Positive .38 Special pictured here for a time. There are several examples of these sorts of weapons on display at the Winnipeg Police Museum, located at 245 Smith St. Come by from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday to see these exhibits.

The .38 special was also seen in many movies and television shows, including the Charles Bronson vigilante classic "Death Wish" from 1974.

It's been 26 years since the XIII Pan American Games took place in Winnipeg July 23 to Aug. 8. As Winnipeg welcomed the world, the Winnipeg Police Service did their part to keep everyone safe and to keep traffic moving. Winnipeg was buzzing with activity that summer as more than 5,000 athletes from 42 nations took part in 34 sports and 42 disciplines. Canada would place second in the medal count, behind only the United States. The next Pan Am Games will take place in Lima, Peru in 2027.

The winner of the famous cycling race the Tour de France (including the 2025 champion Tadej Pogačar) are know for wearing striking yellow jerseys, signifying the leader of the overall race.

The Winnipeg Police Service were also know to don yellow jerseys, err, jackets, as seen here in this photograph from 1993. Pictured here is Inspector Donald MacDiarmid, getting his own yellow jacket from the cycling officers.

Today the WPS and the Cadet units on bicycles sport uniforms in various shades of blue.

Is it time to bring back the yellow?

The first official use of police dogs in North America was in New York City way back in 1907, though the RCMP used dogs as far back as the 1890s - though more as sled dogs for mail delivery (the RCMP would officially use dogs to aid in policing in 1935).

The Winnipeg Police established their Canine Unit back in 1971, starting a long and proud tradition with the service.

Pictured here is Const D. McLean with PD Baron and Const B. Luhowy and PD Marco from back in 1976.

The Dodge Diplomat was produced between 1977 and 1989, proving to be popular with both the general public and police agencies across North America. Police forces from New York City to California Highway Patrol, to, yes, the Winnipeg Police Service were known to drive these vehicles.

The Dodge Diplomat was also popularized in many Hollywood productions, featured in famous movies such as The Usual Suspects, Basic Instinct and Sir Roger Moore's 007 swan song A View to a Kill.

The vehicle was so popular it even ended up as the basis for several toy lines, as seen here.

The Winnipeg Police Museum and Winnipeg Police Service have a restored 1988 Dodge Diplomat which can be seen at various functions and events throughout the year. It took a lot of effort to restore this vehicle, a tale which can be read here https://shorturl.at/BlzW0

On this date, July 22, in 1884, the Manitoba Daily Free Press (the precursor to the Winnipeg Free Press) published a short story detailing Const. D. Huston's pursuit of "Smith the Horse Thief", armed with only his Wi******er rifle, Const. Huston had to give up the chase when the trail led him 20 miles to the south.

Other interesting stories in this day's newspaper included an advertisement on the upcoming paving of Main Street; A. Brown saw his embezzlement case dismissed due to the prosecution not attending court; and the Winnipeg Association Football Club planned to meeting at 8 o'clock sharp at the Business College. As a result of this meeting, there was no practice on this evening.

Did you know?
Between 1977 and 1983 the crime drama CHiPs aired on NBC. Starring Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox, the show followed the adventures of California Highway Patrol officers "Ponch and Jon”, driving their iconic Kawasaki KZ1000-C1 police motorcycles.

CHiPs used the Kawasaki motorcycles as they wanted to be as authentic to policing agencies as possible. Which checks out, because the Winnipeg Police Museum has a 1979 Kawasaki motorcycle used by the Winnipeg Police Service during the same era on display in their front viewing area at 245 Smith Street.
