The Fort Garry Horse Museum & Archives

The Fort Garry Horse Museum & Archives The Fort Garry Horse Museum depicts the Regiment's history from its origins in 1885 to the present.

The FGH Museum is designed to display the history of the Regiment from its origins to the present time through use of artifacts, photographs and archival material. The Museum was established in its present location in 1978 and is located on the third floor of McGregor Armoury. Description of the Museum

The museum consists of 3 display rooms, a connecting hallway, a library, and larger artifacts d

isplayed around the armoury and outdoors. The LCol SJ Cox room contains displays covering the period from the formation of the regiment in 1912, until the end of the cavalry era in 1939. Photographs, weapons, and cases with artifacts line the walls, while a full size diorama of a First World War horse and rider and a trench replica fill the room. Visitors can follow the history of the regiment chronologically by reading the descriptive text on the walls as they move around the room. The BGen RW Paterson room contains a series of mannequins wearing uniforms covering the period 1912 to the present day. In the transom widow over the door is a specially commissioned stained-glass window with the central device from the Regimental Guidon. The BGen REA Morton room covers the history or the Garrys in the Second World War as they mobilised from a Militia cavalry unit to the 10th Canadian Armoured Regiment, leading the landings on the coast of Normandy, on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The connecting hallway has a series of panels dedicated to the Regular Regiment, from 1958-1970. One cabinet contains a selection of medals and awards given to members of the unit, and another cabinet is used for special displays. At one end of the hallway is a display covering the North-West Rebellion of 1885. The Garrys carry three battle honours from the rebellion as a result of our amalgamation with the Manitoba Horse in 1936. On the parade square of the armoury are a 1955 Triumph dispatch rider’s motorcycle, a German 88mm "Puppchen" wheeled rocket launcher and a "Goliath" demolition vehicle, both captured during the Second World War. Outside the building is a M4A2E8 Sherman tank of 1945 vintage and a Lynx tracked reconnaissance vehicle built in 1967.

A recent update. For years we have had the Mess Dress tunic of LCol Samuel Cox on display, circa 1936. The collar had stitch loops for miniature medals but we did not have a suitable medal group. Thanks to Marway Militaria, we now have this set. All that is missing is the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officer's Decoration miniature to make this group correct for LCol Cox.

A small number of copies are available from the Museum, and the book is also available from McNally-Robinson, Indigo and Amazon.
