Zahalka’s engagement with the natural world and the environments around us.

While Miznon Melbourne may have closed its doors, its recipes and flavours live on in our hearts, and now, in our Rosh Hashanah Companion.

This special Companion is currently in the works, being crafted with love and bringing together recipes and reflections from beloved Jewish chefs, food writers and members of our community, alongside Rosh Hashanah traditions and objects from the Museum Collection.

We’re so happy to have Miznon’s Chef Afik Gal share a recipe with us: a vibrant Lubia Salad with snake beans and black-eyed peas.

Lubia, or rubia, is one of the symbolic foods, simanim, of the Rosh Hashanah seder, carrying the hope that our merits and good deeds will multiply in the year ahead.

And this is just one of the recipes making its way to our Rosh Hashanah table. We’ll be revealing more of the people, stories and flavours behind the Companion very soon. Watch this space. We can’t wait to share it with you.

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, many of us find ourselves reflecting on where we’ve been and where we’d like to go next.

Join us for an intimate workshop with Inbal Nissim, founder of The Spiritual Studio, and take some time to pause, reflect and reconnect with what matters most. Through guided intuitive writing and creative exploration, you’ll consider the year that has passed and shape an intention for the year ahead.

Together, we’ll create a small artwork to carry forward, a personal reminder of the hopes, values and aspirations you wish to nurture in the coming year.

No creative experience is necessary. Whether you’re looking for a moment of reflection, a chance to connect with others or a meaningful way to welcome the new year, all are welcome.

Myra Kaufman is one of the creative facilitators behind our upcoming Memory keepsake box workshop on Sunday 23 August.

Inspired by ZAHALKAWORLD: an artist's archive, Myra will guide participants through the process of transforming memories, stories and treasured objects into unique keepsake boxes using collage and printmaking-inspired techniques.

An Artist in Residence at Firestation Print Studio, Myra works primarily in collagraphy, etching and mixed media, combining texture, printmaking and layered imagery in her creative practice.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll explore how images, textures and personal mementos can help preserve memories and uncover new stories. No artistic experience is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to create something meaningful.

Join us and discover how creative practice can bring memories to life, one story at a time.

We're excited to share that a new artwork by Melbourne artist Joel Adler will soon find its home at the Jewish Museum of Australia.

This major new work, part of our 2026 Eva and Marc Besen Contemporary Artist Commission, will bring Joel’s distinctive approach to light, movement and interaction into conversation with our Museum and community.

Known for creating kinetic sculptures that respond to their environment, Joel invites us to slow down, look closer and experience the world from a different perspective. From his award-winning Viewfinder to striking public works across Australia, his practice is driven by curiosity, reflection and a sense of wonder.

We'll be sharing more in the months ahead.

Limited edition print by Anne Zahalka

Created especially for ZAHALKAWORLD: an artist’s archive, The Bondi Bathers 2026, revisits Anne Zahalka's iconic The Bathers, 1989, through the lens of Jewish identity, family history and community.

In this new work, Zahalka incorporates the original Hakoah emblem, inspired by a badge worn by her mother, Hedy, as a swimmer for the Hakoah Club in Vienna during the 1930s. Meaning 'the strength', the Hakoah symbol acknowledges resilience, belonging and connection, linking a personal family story with one of Australia's most recognisable cultural landscapes.

Released in conjunction with the exhibition, this exclusive archival pigment print is available in a strictly limited edition of 20. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Proceeds from every sale are shared between the artist and the Jewish Museum of Australia, supporting our exhibitions, programs and collection.
