Based off a book often described as unfilmable, François Ozon's adaptation of Albert Camus' classic novel is intoxicating and mystifying in equal measures.

THE STRANGER follows Meursault, a young, seemingly indifferent Frenchman living in 1940s Algiers, who is on trial for the inexplicable murder of an Arab local. A pointed look at the corrosive nature of colonialism and apathy, catch it in our matinee sessions.

Melbourne Cinémathèque's upcoming season dives into the work of one of the most notable figures in the poetic realism movement – Marcel Carné.

Beginning as a critic before apprenticing as a camera assistant, Marcel Carné moved quickly from technician to a defining voice of late-1930s French cinema.

This season offers a carefully selected taste of works from key periods of Carné’s career, including his wartime masterpiece LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS, the moody thriller LE JOUR SE LÈVE, and a tale of rebellious youth, LES TRICHEURS.

Hu Bo 胡波’s AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL unfolds over a single day in a bleak northern Chinese city, following four drifting souls – a bullied student, a neglected boy, a desperate mother, and an aging man – each seeking escape from disillusionment.

Completed shortly before Hu’s death at 29, the film was lauded winning the highly prestigious FIPRESCI Prize at Berlin International Film Festival, and Best Feature at the Golden Horse Awards.

The Irish Film Festival Australia is serving more films, more stories and more craic than ever before! 🍀

This year’s festival offers audiences an unmissable window into contemporary Ireland, celebrating the people, places, music and stories that continue to shape the country’s distinctive and beloved cinematic voice.

Highlights include Galway Film Fleadh award winners HORSESHOE and GIRLS & BOYS, and IFTA nominees BÁITE (THE DROWNED) and the deeply moving documentary TESTIMONY.
