Anthea Kemp: What’s found behind and stays attached

‘What’s found behind and stays attached’ presents a series of responsive paintings that reflect my ongoing interest in land conservation and the ways ecological knowledge can be expressed through painting. This body of work is the outcome of my time as the recipient of the Urbach Scholarship at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) Shepparton Art Museum (SAM)

Over three months, I spent time immersed in the conservation work of the Euroa Arboretum and the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seed Bank on the land of the Taungurung people, while also developing my painting practice in the SAM studio. My intention was to learn from and engage directly with the regenerative actions occurring at these sites. These experiences became the foundation for a studio process grounded in observation, intuition, and material response.

Returning to the studio, I created numerous oil studies on loose canvas—an exploratory process that allowed me to attune to the forms, rhythms, and colour palettes of the environments I had been spending time in. These informal works became a space to test mark-making and compositional approaches influenced by native plant forms and shifting ecological conditions.

The final works emerge from this process. They oscillate between abstraction and representation, drawing on the forms of native species such as Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass), Eucalyptus microcarpa (Grey Box), and Banksia marginata (Silver Banksia). These plants serve as visual and conceptual anchors within each composition.

Through these paintings—situated between research, reflection, and response—I hope to highlight the critical role of land conservation and to evoke a deeper awareness of our shared responsibility in caring for and regenerating ecological systems.

Natalie Ryan Natalie Ryan is a Melbourne-based artist whose practice explores the representation of the cadaver and natural sciences throughout history and their inclusion in contemporary art. Working predominantly in sculpture and photography, she is interested in the process of imaging the natural world and the exchange between science and art that has allowed this. Ryan has a PhD from Monash University and her work has featured in curated exhibitions at the Bathurst Regional Gallery, Blackartprojects, Linden New Art and the Lorne Sculpture Biennial. Natalie Ryan is represented by Kyneton Stockroom Stockroom Art Gallery

Gian Manik Gian Manik is a Naarm based artist whose dexterous approach to image making is characterised by an irreverence for genre and driven by a compulsion to paint. Interested in undermining the colonial properties of historical painting, Manik ambiguates tradition through the representation of multivalent or tangential subjects. Since completing a Master of Fine Art (Honours) at Monash University in 2012, has exhibited widely across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand in institutional contexts including the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Perth Institute for Contemporary Art, and Gus Fisher Gallery, University of Auckland, among others. Additionally, his work has been featured in significant group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Manik was a resident artist at Gertrude Studios from 2022-2024. Examples of his work are found in important public collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth/Boorloo; Monash University Museum of Art, Naarm/Melbourne; and Artbank. Gian Manik is represented by Sutton Gallery, Melbourne Sutton Gallery

Jon Cattapan’s Jon Cattapan paintings, drawings and prints deal primarily with ways of representing urban topographies and narratives. His work is characterised by panoramic, layered city vistas and figurative groupings, and has a long-held preoccupation for the way human beings negotiate territories. Cattapan has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas since 1979. A survey exhibition of his work was held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne in 2006.Cattapan’s work features in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and every major state and public institution in the country. Abdul Abdullah Abdul Abdullah is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice is primarily concerned with the experience of the ‘other’. As an Australian with Malay/Indonesian and convict/settler heritage, Abdullah’s projects have engaged with different marginalized minority groups and he is particularly interested in the disjuncture between perception/projection of identity and the reality of lived experience. His work has featured in major exhibitions including the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial, 2015, QAGOMA, Brisbane, Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia 2020, and Rememory: Biennale of Sydney 2026, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
