Housed in the historic Former Royal Mint building, the Museum is home to the long-term collection Gods, Myths & Mortals: Greek Treasures Across the Millennia from the iconic Benaki Museum, Athens. The collection provides a snapshot of Greek history, from Classical, to Byzantine, Post-Byzantine, and Neo-Hellenic, winding through 8,000 years of Greek civilisation around the ground floor of the Mint,

including the original gold vault. The Museum holds events throughout the year, from the popular Summer Cinema program, to theatre, live music, and lectures.

Did you know that stories exploring gender and same-sex love appear in some of the world's oldest surviving literature?

In just 132 lines of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', the tale of Iphis and Ianthe offers a glimpse into how diverse experiences of gender, identity and love have been part of human history and storytelling for thousands of years.

While ancient understandings of gender and sexuality differed from those of today, these stories ultimately remind us that LGBTQIA+ people have always existed, and that we have always sought to understand ourselves and one another.

Happy Pride Month to all who celebrate. 🌈

Museum Week is coming to a close, and today’s final theme is “Hope”. What could be more fitting than the myth of Pandora’s Box?

In recent months, visitors have left countless messages on the walls of Ten Thousand Sorrows: a participatory exhibition that explores the myth of Pandora by symbolically capturing sorrows in a jar, and unleashing messages of hope in their place.

Here are just a few of our favourite hopes and dreams people have wished for 🩷 Let us know your favourite in the comments. 👇

Don’t miss this special opportunity to meet Greek artist Caroline Rovithi!

Caroline is a conceptual and visual artist based in Athens, whose works celebrate identity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Greece through bold 1980s and pop culture aesthetics.

Caroline will be visiting the Hellenic Museum for two special days, where visitors can meet the artist and ask questions about her vibrant works. Thursday 11 & Friday 12 June only, free with Museum entry.

This event is part of Caroline’s wider tour of Australia, sponsored by and under the patronage of the Honorary Consul-General of Greece in Queensland, Mr George & Mrs Ying Mastrocostas.

With sincere thanks to organisers and valued sponsors G & K Stamboulidis and Family, Intralot, the Mantzis Family, the Siolis Family, the Stamoulis Family and Zaparas Lawyers.

CW: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the 6th slide may contain the images of people who have passed away.

Reconciliation Week is a chance for all Australians to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, and celebrate the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Despite their physical distance, there are a surprising number of common threads between First Nations and Greek cultures – and today we’re shining a light on one of these intersections. This is the story of how the Larrakia peoples (Traditional Owners of the greater Darwin region) and a Greek migrant family helped create an Aussie Friday night classic – fish and chips with barramundi.

From city-states at war, to nations divided by borders, the Olympic Games have long offered something rare: a moment of shared humanity. 🏛️🌍

Today, on International Museum Day, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme of "Museums Uniting a Divided World" and the powerful role museums play in preserving stories that connect us across times, cultures, and beliefs.

Experience these and many more remarkable objects in "Rituals: Gifts for the Gods", on display at the Hellenic Museum until Sunday 31 May. Plan your visit at the link below. 💙🔗
