Housed in the historic Former Royal Mint building, the Museum is home to the long-term collection Gods, Myths & Mortals: Greek Treasures Across the Millennia from the iconic Benaki Museum, Athens. The collection provides a snapshot of Greek history, from Classical, to Byzantine, Post-Byzantine, and Neo-Hellenic, winding through 8,000 years of Greek civilisation around the ground floor of the Mint,

including the original gold vault. The Museum holds events throughout the year, from the popular Summer Cinema program, to theatre, live music, and lectures.

✨ EXHIBITION NOW OPEN ✨

Today we open the doors to 'Divine Thresholds: Icons and the Orthodox Christian World', a major new exhibition exploring the power, beauty and enduring legacy of Orthodox icons and sacred objects.

Bringing together more than 130 extraordinary works dating from the 15th to 19th centuries, 'Divine Thresholds' invites us to look beyond the surface of these objects and consider the worlds they connect: the earthly and the divine, the past and the present, the seen and the unseen.

Discover centuries of devotion, artistry and tradition, and encounter a world where art becomes a threshold to something greater – now open 10AM–4PM daily in Melbourne CBD, included with museum entry. 🕊️

Last month the Hellenic Museum once again had the privilege of visiting some of the older members of Melbourne's Greek community through our ongoing partnership with Fronditha Care! This time, we went on the road with two new programs:

🏅 "The Spirit of the Olympics", celebrating the Olympic Games in both ancient Greece and the modern world
🫒 "Olives: The Gift of Athena", exploring the history of the olive tree and the importance of olives throughout Greek history

It was a joy to see participants handle real Olympic torches; wear olive and bay wreath crowns; craft their own olive and rosemary bouquets; explore depictions of olive gatherers from over 2500 years ago; reminisce about past Olympic Games; and even compete in a 'mini Olympics' 🏆

But the best thing of all? These visits are more than a one-way experience. While the Hellenic Museum visits aged care facilities and community groups to help share the wonder of Greek history with people of all ages and backgrounds, our team often finds they learn just as much from the wonderful people they're teaching. Never stop learning! 💗

Young Argonauts have really been making their mark in our Children's Makerspace! 🌈🖍️

Inspired by "Windows Into the Past" – Lara Moisi's vibrant series of Greek vase paintings – this colourful activity invites kids to create their own rainbow scratch-art vase to frame, decorate and take home.

As they create, young visitors are encouraged to look closely at the artworks around them, imagine the stories their vessels might tell, and experiment with artistic principles like form and negative space.

It's creative, hands-on fun... with a little Greek history and art theory hidden inside. 😉

Did you know that stories exploring gender and same-sex love appear in some of the world's oldest surviving literature?

In just 132 lines of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', the tale of Iphis and Ianthe offers a glimpse into how diverse experiences of gender, identity and love have been part of human history and storytelling for thousands of years.

While ancient understandings of gender and sexuality differed from those of today, these stories ultimately remind us that LGBTQIA+ people have always existed, and that we have always sought to understand ourselves and one another.
