Maritime (Green, White, Yellow)

In Maritime, Ortiz presents an encounter suspended between intimacy and
uncertainty. Two figures emerge from a shared marine ecosystem; their bodies entwined
with tentacular forms that both connect and unsettle them. Neither fully human nor fully
other, the figures occupy a liminal space where identity, intention, and power remain
unresolved.
The scene resists fixed interpretation. The figures appear poised at a threshold, between
conflict and desire, protection and struggle. Ortiz invites viewers to project their own
emotional states onto the work, allowing meaning to shift across time and experience.
Presented in three colour variations, green, white, and yellow, the composition is subtly
transformed through changing emotional registers. Within the context of this exhibition, the
focus reflects on hybridity, vulnerability, and the complexities of belonging in motion.

From the Same Womb

From the Same Womb reflects the fragile paradox of shared origins and divergent
becoming. Two forms extend from a common beginning, suspended by a delicate thread
that speaks of connection while revealing distance. Shaped by the same nurturing space,
they emerge from a singular source yet move toward separate and irreconcilable paths.
What once bound them in dependence remains only as an umbilical memory, a trace of
origin that cannot define who they become.
The work explores the tension between belonging and autonomy, questioning how
individuals formed within the same maternal and emotional landscape can grow into
distinct identities. Here, kinship is neither broken nor harmonious; it is stretched, fragile,
persistent, and unresolved, acknowledging that identity is shaped not only by shared
beginnings, but by the distance each life travels beyond them.

Pending Issues

Pending Issues explores the persistent tension between opposing forces that resist resolution. Suspended in proximity, the sculptural forms embody relationships shaped by contrast, negotiation, and endurance. Neither force overpowers nor dissolves into the other; instead, they are compelled to coexist, navigating difference while searching for points of connection.

Through softness, weight, and suspension, the work reflects the emotional and psychological spaces where conflict and intimacy intersect. Pending Issues speaks to the fragile balance required to inhabit relationships, identities, and histories that cannot be simplified into harmony, but must instead be continuously renegotiated, because every human being is a consequence of their contradictions. Identity is not forged through clarity, but through the uneasy acceptance of disparity.

Quiet Devourer

The Quiet Devourer inhabits the internal landscape of anxiety as a living presence rather than a passing emotion. Its layered, organic forms suggest a body that grows quietly within, shaped by the repetitive rhythm of intrusive thoughts and the constant weight of internal dialogue. The sculpture reflects how anxiety can feel both intimate and foreign; inseparable from the self while existing as an independent force that moves beneath awareness. It evokes the experience of becoming lost within one’s own thinking, where thoughts accumulate, overlap, and distort perception, creating spaces that feel simultaneously protective and suffocating.
The work imagines anxiety as an organism that feeds on attention, memory, and fear, expanding through folds and cavities that mirror the complexity of the mind when it turns inward. Rather than portraying anxiety as an external threat, The Quiet Devourer recognises it as a companion that lives beneath consciousness, shaping emotional responses and behaviour. Through its ambiguous form, the sculpture invites reflection on the unseen architectures of mental experience a silent presence sustained by the very life it inhabits.

Stack of bricks

Stack of bricks is a playful research on the materiality of the brick. The artwork showcases what seems to be brick-like objects made out of different materials. Each brick is accompanied by a 1-minute video, which illustrates to the viewer the intended use of this specific object within a performative action interpreted by the artist himself.

Hugs & flowers giver

The Hugs and Flowers Giver is inspired by Mexican alebrijes, the kangaroo as a symbol of Australia, and the spiritual traditions of Día de Mu***os. The title reflects the sculpture’s role as a symbolic messenger of affection, healing, and remembrance, a creature that offers emotional warmth and beauty in times of transition, loss, and renewal. By merging these cultural references, the work speaks to migration, identity, and the creation of new hybrid narratives across borders.

The sacred heart painted on the body represents devotion, resilience, and the emotional core that connects ancestral memory with present experience. The wings symbolise freedom, transformation, and the ability to move between worlds, physical, cultural, and spiritual.

Constructed from papier-mâché, acrylic paint, and fabric, the sculpture draws on traditional craft practices while reinterpreting them through a contemporary, surreal lens. Its vibrant colours and intricate patterns echo Mexican folk art while celebrating life, death, rebirth, and the power of generosity, embodied in the act of giving hugs and flowers as universal gestures of care and connection.

Expressions

Expressions is an exploration of the human face as a site of silent communication. Through clay, the work focuses on subtle gestures, almost imperceptible shifts that fundamentally alter how expression, emotion, and presence are perceived.

The modelling process is approached through an intuitive and empirical practice, where direct contact with the material replaces academic representation. Clay functions not only as a medium but as a language in itself: a primal material that retains the trace of the hand and reveals the relationship between the body that shapes and the form that emerges. Within this dialogue, error, adjustment, and repetition become essential components of the work.

The pieces are presented as fragments of faces, detached from the body and stripped of narrative context. This fragmentation suspends fixed identity and redirects attention toward expression as a transient state rather than a defined emotion. The faces do not interact with one another; instead, they exist in a shared pause, positioned between observing and being observed.

The use of a material historically associated with utilitarian and domestic objects introduces a tension between function and contemplation. Like everyday vessels shaped from earth, these forms originate from common matter yet occupy a space of symbolic reading.

Expressions propose a reflection on non-verbal communication, the construction of identity, and the capacity of the human gesture to convey meaning without the use of words.
