Designed by James Hoban and George Washington as the President's "Public Audience Room," the East Room is the largest of the White House's State Rooms.

Since then, it's served as a laundry room, hosted a presidential wedding, held seven presidents lying in state, and in 1964, witnessed the Civil Rights Act signed live on television. Two centuries of American history, all in one room and ready for you to explore at our Immersive Theatre.

This photo taken on February 5, 1971, by Jack E. Kightlinger shows First Lady Pat Nixon discussing art with White House Curator Clement E. Conger. Mrs. Nixon frequently consulted with Conger as during her time in the White House she refurbished nine rooms and added over 600 items to the White House Collection.

Last entry to The People's House is 3:30pm on Thursday, August 20 due to a special event. Any visitors arriving after 3:30pm must have a reserved ticket for the Foyt Racing Pit Stop. Walk-up passes will not be available. The White House History Shop will remain open until 6pm.
