American Latinos are inextricably woven into the fabric of the United States and have contributed mightily to the development of our great nation. For the benefit of all Americans, and to ensure our country’s future vitality, there is a compelling need to better tell this story. Through an exhaustive process, the Commission has determined that a national museum focused on American Latino history, art, and culture is not only viable but essential to America’s interests.

Sylvia Rivera was an activist who advocated for transgender people and the homeless, and was heavily involved with the Gay Liberation Front. Sylvia co-founded the Street Transvestite (later Transgender) Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with longtime friend Marsha P. Johnson. Through STAR, Sylvia and many others fought for the New York City Transgender Rights Bill and for a trans-inclusive New York State Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act. As a member of the Metropolitan Church of New York, Sylvia worked with the food pantry. Up until her death in 2002, Sylvia was passionate about helping q***r youth. To honor her legacy, the Metropolitan Church of New York created the Sylvia Rivera Food Pantry and established a shelter for q***r youth called Sylvia’s Place.

In honor of Pride we honor the life of Sylvia Rivera and the many LGBTQ+ advocates that have led the way for the next generation. Adelante!

We are always grateful to the men and women who dedicate their life to service and deeply appreciate the servicemen and women at home and around the globe who protect their homeland. Our hearts are with their friends and families at this time.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! On this day we remember the victory of Mexican soldiers over the French army on May 5, 1862. Mexican President Benito Juarez suspended all payments of foreign debts in 1861, leading to a French invasion. As the troops marched across the country, French soldiers were met with resistance from the residents of Puebla. Outnumbered two to one, the Mexican soldiers defeated the French, and in 1866 when the Mexican government expelled the French from their country, President Juarez declared May 5 a national holiday.

FRIENDS is proud to celebrate the historic moments that create cultural phenomenon. This holiday is a true reminder of the grit and determination of Latinos. Sharing our stories with each other and the world is the core of our mission. We wish everyone a happy Cinco de Mayo, cheers!

As part of UN Spanish Language Day, we recognize the role the language has played in shaping American culture. Spoken as the primary language in 20 countries and by nearly 500 million people worldwide, Spanish ranks as the second most spoken language by number of native speakers. In the United States, Spanish has been spoken for hundreds of years—even before English reached the continent. This deep-rooted presence affirms a powerful truth: Spanish is an American language.

For over five centuries, Latinos in the U.S. have shaped this language, making it a vessel for identity, culture, and connection. FRIENDS of the National Museum of the American Latino proudly celebrates this enduring legacy and is excited to continue telling our stories—through the museum and far beyond.
