May 14, 1932, Nice, French Riviera. This is Robert and Marie Dubois. Married 2 years. They took the train from Paris just for 3 days by the sea. No hotel money, so they slept on the beach. But they dressed like it was a palace. Marie wore her fur collar coat and cloche hat. Robert wore his best suit and polished boots. They sat on that rock for the photographer. 5 francs for the photo. That was dinner money. But Marie said “We need to remember we were happy once.” Behind them, the Promenade des Anglais. Palm trees, rich villas, calm water. In front of them, life. 1932 was Depression time. Robert lost his job at the bank. Marie sold her piano. Yet here they are, smiling. Not because life was easy. Because they had each other. They kept this photo till 1985. Robert died first. Marie said he still looked at it every morning. This is not a vacation photo. This is proof love survives poverty.
