Standard Oil Service Station, Madison, Florida, photographed in 1944 after its early 1940s remodeling.

Standing proudly for nearly 175 years...

St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Madison, Florida, photographed in 1995.

Built in 1851, this historic church has witnessed generations of baptisms, weddings, funerals, and Sunday services. Just two years after this photo was taken, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1997.

In 1947, not every child could easily visit a dentist. So Duval County took dental care on the road.

This photograph shows dental assistant Marjorie Drakeford reviewing a chart with young Larry King inside a mobile dental trailer in Jacksonville, while his mother, Mrs. J. R. King, looks on.

These traveling dental clinics brought checkups and treatment directly to schools and communities, making oral healthcare accessible to children who might otherwise have gone without it. Long before modern mobile health units became common, Florida was already finding creative ways to care for its youngest residents.

Before becoming Madison County Sheriff, Simeon Huey “Simmie” Moore was already serving his community as an early Florida Highway Patrol employee, sometimes patrolling the roads on an Indian motorcycle.

This photograph captures a different side of his life: a father holding his young daughter, Frances Monteen “Teenie” Moore, during a quiet family moment.

Years later, Moore would serve as Madison County Sheriff from 1948 to 1972, becoming a familiar name in local history.
