What if you could meet history- not through a textbook, but through the handwriting of the people who lived it?

As the 'St. Augustine Entertainer' beautifully writes, “A manuscript is a different kind of treasure: a time machine, one that connects us directly to a person, a place and a moment in time.”

Inside the historic Sanchez-Burt House, you can see Einstein’s handwritten calculations, Walt Disney animation drawings, a letter signed by President James K. Polk, an 800-year-old parchment, and so much more.

These aren’t just documents. They’re traces of human lives- mistakes, ideas, emotions, decisions and dreams preserved on paper.

Come experience history at your fingertips. Admission is free.

History doesn't always add up at first glance! 🧐📜

This fascinating document names Eli Whitney as a commissioner to the 1862 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in London. At first, the dates seem impossible, since the elder Eli Whitney died in 1825. The mystery is solved by a simple typo and a case of mistaken identity: the document refers to Eli Whitney Jr., son of the famous inventor. A great reminder to look closely at historical documents and question what we see!
