The exhibit inside the Lighthouse tower gives guests facts about the two lighthouses in St. Augustine. The first was a wooden watchtower which became a 70 ft tall coquina structure that was made an official lighthouse in 1824 by the United States government. It fell into the ocean by 1880.

The second and current lighthouse was built from 1871-1874 and stands at 165 ft tall.

🇺🇸During World War II, the United States Coast Guard was in the Department of the Navy and the men and women, called SPARS, wore a navy uniform. At the Light Station in St. Augustine, Florida, men kept watch at the top and lived in a small barracks building on the Lighthouse property. Anastasia Islanders lived in black out conditions, as U-boats patrolled the coast.

📸: Photos show the U.S. Coast Guard Barracks during World War II and today. View artifacts in a WWII exhibit in the building, which is included in admission at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum.
