Watchtowers in the early colonial New World weren’t built for decoration—they were built for survival.

Their main purpose was to act as an early warning system, scanning the coastline for approaching ships. In an era of rival empires, piracy, and uncertain seas, a single sail on the horizon could mean trade, reinforcements, or danger.

From our watchtower, you can take in views of the St. Augustine Inlet, where trade ships would have likely sailed through to distribute goods of the time or where pirates may have kept watch, planning their raids.

Our cobbler bench is a nod to one of the most essential colonial trades: the cordwainer, or shoemaker, who crafted and repaired footwear by hand long before mass production existed. At the Colonial Quarter, surrounded by centuries of layered history, it’s easy to miss how even the landscape itself was shaped by early ambitions.

When the Spanish brought mulberry trees to Florida in the 1500s, it wasn’t for shade or ornament—it was part of an attempt to establish a silk industry in the New World. Mulberry leaves were essential for feeding silkworms, and Florida was briefly seen as a potential silk-producing colony.

The plan never worked out. The climate didn’t cooperate, and the industry faded before it ever fully began. But the trees stayed. Over time, mulberries found a different role—providing fruit, forage, and shade, quietly becoming part of Florida’s living landscape.

At the time of the colonial era, a blacksmith would work the fire in the forge, heating and shaping metal for chains, tools, and everyday equipment. The heat from a double-bellows forge could reach up to 2,400°F, making the iron malleable for hammering and forming. Alongside the blacksmith, a young apprentice known as a bellows boy would operate the bellows throughout the day, keeping a steady flow of air to maintain the intense heat needed for the craft.
