Gail Backus, a mixed-media painter from Ontario, Canada, infuses her artwork with the soul of a poet and the grace of a pianist. Each stroke of her brush captures a moment, a melody, or an emotion as she navigates through landscapes, seasons, and harmonies. Her exploration of color and form is a spontaneous expression of her innermost feelings. "My paintings are haikus to the beauty of nature," she explains. In her latest collection, she delves into the world of flowers, using gouache and ink to depict their delicate allure. During the lockdown, Backus found solace in her garden, where she would spend her afternoons surrounded by blossoms. As she painted these blooms, she transitioned from capturing their outward appearance to exploring their inner complexities, focusing on intricate details. This series reflects the ever-changing beauty of nature's sanctuary, inviting viewers to engage in moments of serene contemplation.

CHAMM’S, a visionary abstract painter, found her artistic journey unfolding unexpectedly. In 2011, a pilgrimage to Stonehenge sparked nightly drawings that appeared in her sleep, revealing messages she couldn't decipher. Teaching herself the language of calligraphy, colors, spirals, and textures, she blends them into a unique aesthetic. Inspired by lyrical, geometric, and fractal abstraction, as well as impressionism, she sees herself as an external observer rather than a creator. With minimal control over her paintings, she lets her hands be the channel of Spirit, akin to automatic or mediumistic painting.

“My art goes beyond mere colors and supports; it is a spiritual journey. I create abstract landscapes that embody a unique consciousness and vision, releasing emotions and capturing silenced visual memories.”

Amidst today's environmental crises, art transcends mere expression to become a potent force for change. As our world contends with the repercussions of climate change, deforestation, pollution, and dwindling biodiversity, artists globally harness their creativity to spark dialogue, evoke introspection, and drive action in defense of our planet.

In honor of Earth Day 2024, we proudly showcase the works of three esteemed Agora Gallery artists: landscape painters Jess Jacobs, Maribel Matthews, and Jeannette Hasler-Gobbi. Lebanese painter Corine Gholam Fawaz captures the intricate beauty and immense power of the universe in her abstract art, emphasizing balance, dynamic forms, and harmonious colors.

As part of our , Fawaz takes us through a step-by-step process of her series titled "Quantum Thinking." In the creation of the Quantum Thinking Series, the artist prioritizes principles of value and contrast, strategically using high contrast and saturated colors to guide the viewer's gaze and create dynamic visual experiences. The process, particularly for larger pieces, is labor-intensive and can span around three months, influenced by relative humidity which affects drying times. Despite having a clear vision for composition and colors to evoke specific emotional journeys, unexpected outcomes like air bubbles or distortions may occur due to humidity fluctuations, which the artist embraces as part of the creative process. Mistakes are viewed as opportunities for intuition and creativity, driving experimentation and contributing to the individuality of each artwork.

Olga Zeltser's journey as a photographer is shaped by her upbringing in the Soviet era and her experiences living in New York City. Raised amidst challenges, she learned the value of resilience and the importance of appreciating life's blessings from her mother, who instilled in her a love for creativity through travels, piano lessons, and folk dancing. The tumultuous events of the 1991 Soviet coup further ignited Zeltser's independent spirit and inspired her to capture the untold stories of Russian folk through street photography.

For Zeltser, photography is more than just a visual medium—it's a powerful tool for storytelling that immortalizes fleeting moments and forges enduring connections. Her emotion-driven approach to photography creates an intimate link between the act of capturing an image and the specific temporal instances it represents. Specializing in black and white street and wildlife photography, Zeltser skillfully distills intricate narratives into singular frames, celebrating the brevity of life and encouraging viewers to explore the hidden beauty that lies beyond the surface.

Agora Gallery is pleased to announce Nature Speaks, a group exhibition of paintings that depict the pristine beauty of the natural kingdom. The selection includes works on canvas, wood panel, and paper executed in oils and a variety of water-based media. Greens and blues dominate the palettes, whether found in the turquoise waters of the sea, the emerald foliage of the woods, or the parakeet and fern gradients of a hill, offering an immersive experience of tranquility.

Roman god sculptures conjure visions of decadent gardens, perhaps in abandoned villas somewhere in the Italian countryside, where wildflowers and weeds reclaim their rightful ownership. Beautiful gardens, idyllic escapes graced with resplendent blooms, a black swan, the fonds of a willow tree in a park–everything celebrates the magnificence of the natural world.

Even when present, human figures act out secondary roles, existing solely in correlation with their surroundings. Receding in the distant background, they stand as quiet observers. Free at last of its artificial counterpart, nature’s voice reverberates through the valleys, forests, skies, and oceans, unleashing its full healing power. At a loss for words, we bow to the infinite eloquence of the natural world and remain silent, for a change.

Dancer, choreographer, and educator, Rebecca Stenn's artistic journey began with a realization: the paintbrush is an extension of her body's movements. Through abstract paintings, Stenn conveys movement and spatial awareness, infusing her strokes and textural rendering with life. Influenced by activism, her work speaks volumes about color, space, and the human experience. Her journey as an artist began with purely abstract paintings, focusing on the process of creation and the movement required for various textures. Her artwork continues to evolve, reflecting her lifelong passion for movement and the dynamic interplay of color, line, and shape.

"My paintings grew out of my fascination with movement," says . "I paint the same way that I move through space; carving, pulling, and expanding. In this medium of expression, motion spills onto the canvas. I paint with sensuality and spaciousness, with strength and softness, with attention to color and line and shape and abandon all at once."

Meet Angel Espino, an American artist whose captivating pours on canvas capture the dynamic beauty of paint in motion. From layering colors to revealing intentional forms, Espino's abstract expressionist methods blend planned and unplanned elements, mirroring life's journey of self-exploration and personal narratives. Inspired by Van Gogh, he aims to recreate the transformative experience of art for his audience, inspiring the next generation of artists. With each brushstroke, Espino navigates a spontaneous dance of creativity, embracing the surprise of the unknown and weaving emotions into a tapestry of meaning.
