Shadows by Stojan Pavleski

Reception for the Artist on Tuesday, June 17th from 6 to 8 pm:

The project Shadows (2025) is conceived in three correlated units: the series of photographs entitled It is a plastic, baby! (2024/25), the video Stalker (2022), and appropriated drawings (from the mid-60s) published in the first weekly magazine in Macedonia —Young Fighter [Млад Борец], authored works by the artist’s father, Vlado Pavleski (b. 1948).

Shadows (2025)

The Shadows project, conceptualized as a collage installation, illustrates the former glorifications of the ideological meaning of warfare, in contrast to the current senseless exploits in the name of the new order, dislodging man from the time he lives in. Locating the Stalker and his confrontation with the banality of expectations, the concept asks, what is the meaning of human positioning in the apocalyptic scenarios of today? Witnessing living through the industrial-plastic era, trade wars, and the accumulation of capital, the project addresses the question of human survival, left to one’s own instincts, and perhaps, forced into paramilitary survival.

The fragmented photographs with war scenes as friezes from the new pantheons of power and the drawings from the post-war period made by my father collide in the concept of the Stalker—ultimately faced with the pseudo-potency of the time he lives in. The appropriated drawings are critical resuscitations with a recontextualized message in a time when symbolism is consumed faster than it is understood. Their correlation with the plastic toy soldiers and the lone Stalker raises the question: What lingers on the periphery of the collective consciousness, and do these ghosts of resistance cast their shadows across generations?

Ensemble Ipse presents “The Ways In Which,” a collaborative installation and performance exploring divergent themes of isolation. Created by composer Joseph Di Ponio, visual artist Catherine Katsafouros and performer Margaret Lancaster, this work is part of Ensemble Ipse’s innovative SiteWorks series, which focuses on long-duration pieces designed for specific spaces.

“The Ways In Which” transcends traditional concert formats to create an immersive sound and video environment. The transformative multimedia installation will run uninterrupted from 11 am - 4 pm. At 4 pm, Lancaster will navigate the installation in a one hour performative exploration of 5 disparate modalities of isolation (social isolation, shelter, political isolation, confinement, sanctuary). This work invites audiences to experience a layered, contemplative space where live performance, electronic soundscapes and evocative visuals intermingle and engage.

This event is sponsored, in part by The Amphion Foundation, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The Alice M. Ditson Fund, The New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Wednesday, June 4th from 7 pm: The Magic of Tango

The carefully curated repertoire includes iconic compositions such as:
• “Libertango,” “Oblivion,” “Adios Nonino” by Astor Piazzolla
• “Por una cabeza,” “El día que me quieras” by Carlos Gardel
• Works by Mariano Mores, Goran Bregović, and others
• Original arrangements and improvisations by the ensemble

These works span different eras, styles, and moods, offering a panoramic view of tango’s journey through time. Each piece is reimagined through the lens of contemporary performance practice, maintaining the soul of the tradition while adding new layers of interpretation and expression.

At its heart, “Passionate Embrace” is a tribute to tango’s eternal magnetism—its power to unite, seduce, and tell stories without words. It is a celebration of music that is simultaneously nostalgic and modern, structured and free, melancholic and life-affirming. Through this project, the ensemble seeks to bring the audience closer to the emotional depth and artistic brilliance of tango.

A 52nd Street Story

Curated by Akshay Jain

We find ourselves in a state of persistent exhaustion—a quiet despair that builds with each unraveling thread of the world around us. The political landscape feels chaotic, erratic, and unmoored. We are inundated with noise—distractions that pierce even our most private spaces, carried in by the very devices we rely on. These tools excel not at clarity, but at feeding us a steady stream of doubt, discontent, and perceived inadequacy.

What does it mean to live within this spiral—where the energy around us seems to dismantle more than it creates?

We turn to communities grounded in consistent, intentional practice—places where action takes precedence over paralysis. From these quiet, generative spaces, something essential begins to emerge. In the simple act of doing, a familiar pattern is disrupted. And in its place, new forms take shape.

Through art, we create openings—moments that invite reflection beyond the despair that surrounds us. These gestures, however small, carry weight. They remind us of what sets us apart: our capacity to tell stories, to make meaning together, to build something larger than ourselves through shared experience and expression.
