Aya Uekawa’s painting Wishes, 2025 is one of three on view in PRAYER / PATTERN / PRAYER

“Aya Uekawa, who uses patterns as a spatial element in figurative works about femininity and myth...”

Paints a balance between individual identity and the surrounding environment and, yes, delves into themes of gender and cultural exchange in this contradictory world.

Uekawa’s works resonate universally, connecting past and present, real and imagined.

Beautiful pieces by .shtereva in Prayer / Pattern / Prayer curated by .dickey on view now until February 15!

Lilian’s work explores a personal affection and adornment of cloth that drives her artistic interpretation of mending worn, hand-woven and traditional textiles into soft sculptural forms that investigate ideas of cultural dissonance, home and space with the focus on family and legacy. The use a variety of mediums, including most of the traditional fabrics that were hand-woven by the artists’s great-grandmother as well as the “found object” are signifying the importance of place – the place that is defined by ancestry. The manual labor in sewing, embroidery and quilting is a direct measurement of time, by collaborating with the generations that came before, the artist’s work signals the urgency of and need to absorb practical knowledge as a sustainable practice for uncertain futures. The artist’s use of handicrafts and domestic objects to signify her conection to her home and family, and to simultaneously explore her own diasporic experience living in the United States by engaging in the craft techniques of her maternal ancestors.

Lilian Shtereva, born in 1994 and raised in Haskovo, Bulgaria, is a Brooklyn – based artist. Lilian is currently in the BFA program in Studio Arts at Hunter College, CUNY, New York and will be graduating in 2025.

Prayer / Pattern / Prayer connects a group of eight artists who all partake in the prayer of pattern; but who each draw from distinct cultural and material vocabularies. The purpose of the exhibition is to look at what contemporary approaches to pattern share in common, and to provide a space in which we can better appreciate differences in the way that living artists relate to a profound and timeless practice.

"Puka Komo ʻEkahi: Door to Grant Permission" is the first in an ongoing series of works that explore Native Hawaiian language and pattern as a portal to access ancestral knowledge, inviting the viewer to consider ways in which their own consciousness may be transformed to adopt new ways of knowing. The text, written in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and gilded in metal leaf, references a traditional oli komo, a welcome chant, granting one permission to enter a space.

With rhythmic motifs hand-painted on kapa (customary Hawaiian barkcloth) entirely in earth pigments gathered in Hawaiʻi and Oregon, the site-specific traditional materials in this piece shift to exist in a place between the physical and the metaphorical. In doing so, the painting aims to question who has access to certain knowledge, the power encoded in language, and how one may be transported through word and pattern.
-Lehuauakea

Lehuauakea (b. Portland, Oregon, 1996) is a Native Hawaiian artist and cultural practitioner from Pāpaʻikou, Hawaiʻi. With a practice centered on the labor-intensive making of kapa (traditional Hawaiian barkcloth), ʻohe kāpala (carved bamboo printing tools), and the use of natural pigments, Lehua breathes new life into patterns and traditions practiced for generations. Their work addresses themes of environmental relations, Indigenous cultural resilience, and the complexities of contemporary Kanaka Maoli identity. Lehuauakea’s work has been shown in exhibitions nationally and internationally and is held in prominent collections around the globe, including the Portland Art Museum, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art, Forge Project, and the Museum of International Folk Art. The artist is currently based between the continent and Pāpaʻikou after earning their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with a minor in Art + Ecology at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.

OPENING TONIGHT is Naomi Reis's show, Strange Light ! Join us 6-8 to celebrate!

Morgan Lehman Gallery is pleased to present Strange Light, a solo exhibition of new work by Naomi Kawanishi Reis. Through layers of color pencil, pigment prints, acrylic-washed washi cutouts, and semi-precious stones, Reis finds reprieve in the quiet moments of everyday life. The series particularly works through grief, an empty cavern left by loss, with the meditative repetition of manual labor. Drawn from photographs taken on her phone over the past decade, the works search for answers about unseen and unknowable worlds beyond the physical plane, imbuing the landscape with an intensified, animistic presence. The exhibition captures in shadows and glowing refracted light what Reis describes as “unheroic moments” – scenes that take shape in a reflection in a window or a passing glance at a roadside garden at dusk. These fleeting private observations become profound, almost supernatural evocations that are difficult to remember or even describe, as we shuttle between the destinations of our overly scheduled lives.

OPENING TONIGHT is Hilary Iron's show, A Place of Greater Safety!

She wondered if he had been very frightened: if pushed and driven by the crowds he had forgotten the calm at the eye of the storm, the place of safety at the living heart of all the close designs.
–Hilary Mantel, "A Place of Greater Safety"

At the center of motion is a silent core of stillness; in the midst of growth and change is a thread of steady transcendence that moves in and out of visibility. A Place of Greater Safety, Maine-based painter Hilary Irons' first show with Morgan Lehman, takes its title from Hilary Mantel's 1992 novel of the same name, and its thematic content points to the sanctuaries found hidden within turbulence.
