It was the Rope Trick, the twenty -third of the Bangali jugglers’ legerdemain display, that was the most marvelous of all and would become the benchmark against all feats of Indian magic would be measured.
They produced a chain of fifty cubits in length, and in my presence, threw one end of it towards the sky, where it remained as if fastened to something in the air. A dog was then brought forward. And being placed at the lower end of the chain, immediately ran up, and reaching the end, immediately disappeared in the air.

He earned an MFA in film, video, and performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and moved to NYC in 1973. He co-founded the Mudd Club with Steve Mass and Anya Phillips and discovered Jean Michel Basquiat on the dance floor there in 1978! Cortez curated the groundbreaking post-punk art show New York/New Wave @momaps1 in 1981.
He featured new wave artists with graffiti artists, young artists, poets, performers. He boldly hung the exhibition from floor to ceiling and in the halls of the museum. Cortez encouraged Basquiat to make paintings for New York/New Wave which launched the artist’s career!
