The mission of the Hermosa Beach Museum (HBM) is to engage, delight, and educate through the presentation and exploration of local culture and history. Located in the former Pier Avenue Junior High School (the present-day historic building Hermosa Beach Community Center), the HBM renovated this space through private fundraising and opened in 2007 with the current Museum space as it exists today. The Museum's collection of approximately 3500 items includes photographs, postcards, newspapers, prints, ephemera and three dimensional materials. The Museum uses its collection for exhibitions, educational programs, study and research, loans and reproduction. The Hermosa Beach Museum now hosts and facilitates many lively events with and for our South Bay community, including rotating exhibits, educational lectures, guest speakers, family workshops, and book signings. The Museum also provides field trip opportunities for local students and adult visitors. We have an engaging volunteer and docent program, where volunteers and student interns are able to work directly with our Museum staff to welcome guests and process collections. The Museum received a certificate of Accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in the Summer of 2026, the highest national recognition afforded to the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public.
