The mission of the Hermosa Beach Historical Society & Museum is to engage, delight, and educate the community through the presentation and exploration of history. Established in 1987, the HBHS exists for the purpose of preserving and chronicling the history of Hermosa Beach. We serve our community through monthly educational lectures, museum tours, new exhibitions, field trips, fulfilling research requests, and accessible virtual content.

We are excited to announce we will be continuing Pat Gazin’s work of Castles in the Sand. She researched homes and buildings to preserve the architectural history of Hermosa Beach. Before her passing she was working on a second edition to include more structures.

Letters were sent to residents in the original book and those who are featured in the second edition. If your home is considered historic or unusual, we would love to hear from you regardless if you received a letter or not.

In the 1970s, local historian Pat Gazin researched and published two books about Hermosa Beach. Footnotes on the Sand explored the city’s history, while Castles on the Sand documented notable local homes. Pat was an enthusiastic community member, a founding member of the Hermosa Beach Museum, the city’s first female councilmember and mayor, and a meticulous documentarian of local history.

In 2024, the Museum began a project to reprint Castles on the Sand. During this process, we discovered that prior to her passing, Pat had intended to publish a second volume featuring additional historic homes, along with photographs she took in 1977. As a result, we made the decision to produce a new, expanded edition that includes all of the homes Pat documented, as well as additional properties that had not yet been identified.

If you own a Hermosa Beach home built in 1945 or earlier, we’d love to hear from you. We are inviting residents to submit updates, unique architectural features, historic photographs, or to propose a new entry as we expand this important record of our community’s historic homes.

CALLING FOR CONTRIBUTIONS!

The Hermosa Beach Museum is opening a new exhibit featuring John W. Clark’s journey from Scotland to early Hermosa Beach, exploring immigration, civic leadership, and community life in a growing Southern California town.

We are looking for historical photographs and objects related to Lawn Bowling, Little League, Clark Stadium and the Clark Building that can be loaned for the exhibit.

The El Segundo Brass Ensemble will be performing at the Hermosa Beach Museum on February 28th, Saturday from 6pm to 8pm. This night’s theme is Isn’t it Romantic? You will hear your favorite love songs and music from the Romantic Period.

This photograph shows the Hermosa Beach Fire Department in front of the Clark Building. It was likely taken post 1937 when both the Seagrave Fire Engine and Clark building would have been brand new to the Community of Hermosa Beach.

Pictured in the photo, third in front of the left, is Chief Ernie Haas. Fifth in from the left was Floyd “Shorty” Allen, who was a little person. Both served the department for almost two decades and were friends. Hermosa Review articles cite that Allen would live on and off with Haas and his wife, especially during health struggles or injury.

We will be sharing stories from the Hermosa Beach Review to celebrate the digitization of the local newspaper that can now be found online. Come join us on January 22nd from 6pm- 8pm.

Board Member Mark Shoemaker, Director and Curator Jamie Erickson, Program and Education Manager Ryan Basford, Registrar Amara Ly, and Easy Reader reporter Laura Garber will look at the stories, quirks, cartoons, and editorials of local reporting in the twentieth-century.

Doors will open at 6pm and a presentation will begin at 6:30pm; complimentary refreshments will be provided along with a cash bar. Tickets are $10 per person. Make sure to RSVP on our website. See you there!
