Celebrating 100 Years of United Airlines (1926–2026)

Today, we honor a century of connection, innovation, and service. Looking back at these milestones reminds us how far aviation has come:

April 6, 1926: The journey begins! (First photo) Pilot Leon Cuddeback took off in a Swallow biplane for Varney Air Lines (a predecessor of United), carrying the first load of government-contracted airmail.

The Golden Age: Transitioning into the "Mainliner" era, where United set the standard for passenger comfort and introduced the world to the first teams of professional flight attendants.

The Modern Era: From the humble Boise hangar to a fleet of sophisticated wide-body jets that connect continents in hours rather than days.

A Legacy of Firsts

United wasn't just part of the industry; it helped build it. Whether it was being the first to fly commercial mail or leading the way in modern fleet sustainability, the "Friendly Skies" have always looked forward.

Congratulations to the thousands of pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, and ground crew members who have kept the world moving for 100 years. Here is to the next century of flight! 🥂

The Queen has arrived! 👑✈️

We have a very special visitor on the tarmac today: the iconic Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 in its stunning retro livery! This "retro-chic" legend is stopping by the museum for some maintenance and looks absolutely timeless against the California blue sky.

Want to get a closer look at those four massive engines and the classic "cheatline" design?

📍 Where: Flight Path Museum & Learning Center
🕓 When: Today only! Visit us between 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM to see this beauty in person.

Don't miss your chance to see one of the most recognizable aircraft in aviation history before she takes flight again!

Fun Fact: This specific aircraft (Registration: D-ABYT) wears a "retro" paint scheme from the 1970s, but it’s actually a modern Boeing 747-8—the longest passenger aircraft in the world! It was painted this way to celebrate Lufthansa’s 60th anniversary of resumed operations.

See you on the airfield! ✈️📸

We had an incredible time hosting the Shades of Blue event here at the Flight Path Museum! It was an absolute honor to welcome the Shades of Blue team alongside their partners at United Airlines for a day dedicated to mentorship, passion, and the future of flight.

Seeing so many young, eager faces connecting with industry professionals was truly inspiring. From hearing firsthand accounts of life in the cockpit to learning about the world of aerospace, the energy in the room was electric. Our mission has always been to preserve aviation history while fueling the dreams of tomorrow, and events like this do exactly that.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to the pilots and staff who shared their wisdom to help today's Youth become Tomorrow's Answer. 🌍🚀

✈️ From Sketch to Sky: The 1950s Concept of LAX
Long before the Airfield Terminal Modernization Project (ATMP), there was this: the 1958 Master Plan. At the time, this wasn't a reality—it was a bold, futuristic concept designed to solve a problem the world had never seen before: The Jet Age. 🗺️

Before this, LAX was a collection of modest "box" terminals. This plan reimagined the airport as a high-tech machine for moving people and planes.

🏗️ A Conceptual Revolution:
The "Satellite" Innovation: Notice the circular pods in the terminal area. The concept was to have passengers wait in "satellites" surrounded by planes, connected to the main ticket buildings by underground tunnels.

Designing for "The Jet": In the 1950s, engineers weren't sure how loud or heavy commercial jets would be. This plan was a conceptual bet on 10,000 ft runways—an massive length at the time—to ensure the city wouldn't be left behind by the Boeing 707 and DC-8.

Rethinking the Cityscape: The plan proposed a total "Relocation" of major roads like Lincoln and Coast Blvd. It wasn't just an airport plan; it was a conceptual redraw of the Los Angeles coastline.

🗣️ The Evolution Continues...
It’s fascinating to see how a "concept" from 70 years ago became the backbone of our daily commutes. Now, with the ATMP, we are seeing the next great conceptual leap for LAX.

Have you ever wondered about the many evolutions of LAX before this latest project? It makes you realize that the airport is never "finished"—it’s a constantly shifting vision. Share your favorite LAX history facts or memories in the comments! 👇

Throwback to the Jet Age at LAX! ✈️📸

Ever wonder about the history behind the walls of the Flight Path Museum? These vintage shots from July 1984 take us back to when our building was the bustling Imperial Terminal.

Before we were a museum, we served as a gateway for many legendary charter and international airlines. If you look closely at the "Imperial Terminal Airline Directory" in these photos, you can see some of the names that once called this ramp home:

Condor: Bringing vacationers to and from Europe.

Martinair Holland: A staple of Dutch aviation that frequently graced our terminal.

Wardair Canada: Known for their premium service across the border.

Sun Country: Taking travelers to sunny destinations.

The terminal was a unique hub for non-scheduled flights, offering a different vibe from the main LAX terminal loop. Today, you can still see the original mid-century architecture and the same entrance where thousands of passengers began their adventures.

Next time you’re here, take a moment to stand where the terminal shuttle used to drop off travelers (swipe to see the old number 44 bus!)and imagine the roar of DC-8s and 747s right outside.
