Meet our Fall Post Grad Resident, 🎉

Kat Thompson is a multidisciplinary Afro-Jamaican American artist based in Virginia, who works with photography, textiles, sculptural collages, and installations. Her work combines these mediums to explore notions of Black selfhood within the African Diaspora. Being of Jamaican heritage, Thompson confronts her dual identity through recent projects that depict traces of her family’s journey through personal and found materials.

She will be working in Studio 9 Now through October!

Her works have been exhibited at the Fenwick Gallery and Gillespie Gallery at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art in Reston, Virginia. She was the 2021-2022 recipient of the Young Alumni Commissioning Award, College of Visual and Performing Arts: George Mason University and was also awarded the 2023-2025 Hamiltonian Artists Fellowship. Thompson holds her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from George Mason University and her Master of Fine Arts in Photography & Film from Virginia Commonwealth University.

✨ Studio views with our spring/summer post-grad residents, ✨

Samantha Van Heest's depictions of household objects bring up nostalgic memories that lead to deeper conversations about consumerism, colonialist history, and childhood. She writes, "Threads of collecting and preserving continue throughout my current work, which delves into our relationships and rituals with the seemingly mundane."

Be sure to stop by her studio before the end of July to chat about her art and inspiration and to see where you can find her art next!

🎉 Today marks the beginning of our 50th Anniversary🎉

On July 13, 1974, an old waterfront building that used to manufacture torpedoes celebrated a new announcement by the Alexandria Bicentennial Commission. They declared that the former factory would reopen as an Art Center. Two months later, its doors officially opened.

While initially starting as just a three-year experiment, the Torpedo Factory Art Center has become a cultural cornerstone of Alexandria 50 years later.

Check out resident artist, 's exhibition at the Athenaeum Gallery before it closes May 12!

To complement Washington’s festivities celebrating the Japanese cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, the Athenaeum Gallery is featuring three local contemporary artists. Sean Donnan is an illustrator. David Gootnick creates an ancient Japanese artform called Kumiko. Yoshiko Ratliff’s paintings are bold, but intricately detailed representations of Japanese characters and Kimonos.

Check out our current Post-Grad Resident, Lucas Rougeux (.j.rougeux), in Studio 9 ✨

Lucas writes: "I am a cloud of space dust. I am a body knotted in on itself. My multifaceted practice is the product of immense existentialism, a coping mechanism for chronic pains, and a bullhorn for poetry. Through the use of a variety of media and processes, my work draws attention to the most uncomfortable and most unknowable aspects of our lives. There is profound loneliness, grotesque vulnerability, and disturbing interrogations about the meaning of our existence laced throughout my work.

I am a visual poet. Stenciled and handwritten text becomes a vessel for the concepts whirling around the image. In my practice, text communicates lines of poetry, weighted sentiments, calls to action, charged cries, and futile searches for answers. I purposefully play with ideas of silence: be that through created environments that cannot carry sound, or language that seems to fall on unhearing ears and uncaring minds.
I am a prophet-less disciple; mine is a religion of doubt, accountability, and the inevitability of change. My practice is religious, psycho-therapeutic, and urgent. I use symbols like nebulas and black holes to find spirituality in physics and science in the divine; turning celestial phenomena into religious presence. Soft, colorful, amorphous folds are tensions of a straining body yearning for a cure, for treatment, for relief. Pillars of smoke are warning signs and a representation of a world struggling through chaos. My work is an alluring portal into physically personal and existentially intimate mysteries of the unknown. It is a challenge to face the uncertainty of the future.“

Lucas Rougeux will be in Studio 9 through the end of March, make sure to stop by and say hello!

Our Story

Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest number of publicly accessible working-artist studios under one roof. Just south of Washington, D.C., the Art Center overlooks the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria. It is the creative engine that drives Northern Virginia’s cultural scene.

Opened in 1919 as the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in Alexandria, the City of Alexandria repurposed the building in 1974 as one of the country’s first examples of creative placemaking.

Now with more than 165 resident artists in 82 studios on three floors, there is always something new to see and experience. Observe artists at work, ask about their creative processes, learn what inspires them, and discover what inspires you! Shop and bring home original art for your collection.

Find artists working in: Ceramics, Collage & Mixed Media, Fiber, Glass & Enamel, Jewelry, Painting & Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture
