"Absence" from REFLECTION UKNOWN by Fred Zafran

Wondering if you should make time to visit MEG to see Fred Zafran's exhibition, REFLECTION UKNOWN, in person?

Consider this from gallery member Tim Hyde: "This is one of those exhibitions where time spent looking and thinking about what the images represent and how they are sequenced really rewards the viewer. Each viewer is likely to form his or her own narrative. The individual photographs are terrific, of course, but their real power is in the sweep of the whole."

MEG is open from 11am-5pm seven days a week. We hope you'll come by to experience the "sweep of the whole" before the show ends on Sunday, November 19.

Congratulations to MEG member Tim Hyde for his part in MASTERY & MILESTONES, the Washington, D.C. Leica Store's 11th Anniversary exhibition. Leica invited Tim to represent 2014 with an image he made that year, and he chose "Hilltop Silhouette in Craig, Montana, 2014."

MASTERY & MILESTONES encapsulates 11 years and 11 unique stories, all expressed through a Leica M camera. The exhibition will be on display at the DC Leica Store from October 26th - January 25th, 2024.

"Oppie" | Tom Sliter | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #55

It's bittersweet at MEG today as it's the last day of the PROGRESSION Exhibition. An annual show, we repeat it each year because it pushes each of the participating photographers to think outside the box and respond to images that may bear no resemblance to their typical captures. It's also a favorite of gallery visitors as moving through the sequence sparks thought and conversation while pondering the reasons each photograph may have been selected.

PROGRESSION closes today at 5pm. If you're local, you'll find us on the 3rd floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

"Fan at Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA | Francine B. Livaditis | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #46

Francine B. Livaditis tells us why she chose this image as the 46th in the PROGRESSION Exhibition. "The fan's square case echoes the window frame in the preceding photograph. I also was drawn to the detail within the fan itself and its wonderful patina." She also wanted to move the series in a different direction: "I thought it was time to change the prominent shape."

"Schwartz's Deli" | Eric Johnson | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #45

When visitors to the gallery move from Image #44 to Image #45 in the progression, it sometimes takes them a minute to find the connection. When they spot it, it's always a delightful "aha!" moment.

Spoiler alert: Here, Johnson shares why he selected this image to follow #44, Clara Young Kim's mountain landscape. "I needed an image that responded to the previous image of mountains framed by a window. I chose to follow it with a more urban scene framed by a window, that of cooks at Schwartz's Deli in Montreal on a busy night preparing mountains of their famous smoked meat."

With only four days left in the PROGRESSION exhibition, we hope you'll come by before Sunday to see "Schwartz's Deli" and the other 55 images in the show for yourself.

"Nature's Frame" | Clara Young Kim | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #44

Picking up on the mountain landscape in Image #43, Clara Young Kim continued the progression, while reintroducing color into the series. This image was captured in Grand Teton National Park on a day when the haze from wildfire smoke was just beginning to obscure the mountains.

Alan Sislen takes us into the home stretch of the PROGRESSION exhibition with "Old Mining Town." Captured in an old, abandoned mining town in Colorado, Sislen's use of black and white emphasizes the loneliness and isolation of the location.

Eric Johnson shares why he selected this image for #31 in the progression. "This image is part of my recent project focusing on the Key Bridge, which crosses the Potomac River between Georgetown, DC and Rosslyn, VA. The way the Potomac Boat Club is framed by the arches of the bridge is similar to the natural arches of the cypress trees in the previous image, Clara Young Kim's "Mystical Passage."

"Through the Vines" | Van Pulley | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #28

And with this image from Van Pulley, we are at the halfway point in sharing the PROGRESSION exhibition! The show contains 56 images in total.

Many of our gallery visitors ask how each photographer knew which image would precede theirs. Alan Sislen kicked us off by sharing Image #1 with Clara Young Kim, who looked for connections and then selected her image for #2. Clara then shared her image with Eric Johnson so he could select #3 and send it to Francine B. Livaditis to select #4. This continued through all 14 photographers (alphabetically by first name) until it came back to Alan, who started the second round. Four rounds in total = 56 images and every one is on the wall at MEG until Sunday, 10/8. Come see us before it closes!

Tim Hyde's selection for the 26th image in the PROGRESSION exhibition stands on its own as a compelling photograph, but also serves as an excellent bridge between Image #25, which we shared earlier today, and Image #26, which we'll share here very soon.

For the 25th image in our PROGRESSION exhibition, Soomin Ham chose what she describes as "a flower mural that comes alive during the winter in Taos, NM." It's a shift from Sarah Hood Salomon's dark monochrome for Image #24, but we see the connection and we love it!

"Train and Smoke" | Sandy LeBrun-Evans | PROGRESSION Exhibition | #23

We were eager to see what Sandy LeBrun-Evans would add to the sequence after the previous three images were closely tied through their subjects. Sandy picked up on the rectangles and lines found in Image #22, but took us in a new direction with the focus of this image, which is #23 in the progression.

Artist Note: "A rainy morning in Pennsylvania with smoke from the train engine gave me the right atmosphere for this image. I chose this image for PROGRESSION because the graphic elements echoed those found in the image Maureen sent to me to follow. I opted to print the image in a sepia tone for an additional connection." — Sandy LeBrun-Evans
