Four terrific mages from CAPITAL PERSPECTIVES, our current fine art photography exhibition.

Eric Johnson provided us with some background on his Maine Avenue image: "The Maine Avenue Fish Markets are not quite as vibrant as they were before the development of The Wharf along the southwest DC waterfront, but some of the stalls are still thriving, including Jessie's, pictured here, which serves up steamed crabs and shrimp all day long."

Our new exhibition, CAPITAL PERSPECTIVES, juried by Noe Todorovich, features images from the DC region that go far beyond the postcard scenes that we see so often. Eric Johnson's "Lights Out," is a perfect example. "Despite the fact that there has not been an event held at RFK Stadium since 2019, it still looms over the Capitol Hill neighborhood while the final demolition permits work their way through the DC and federal bureaucracy," Johnson says.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, we’d like to express our appreciation to our nation's veterans and share two incredible images taken by fine art photographer Tom Sliter aboard the USS John C. Stennis.

Tom observed and photographed training exercises on the aircraft carrier as part of a congressional delegation. He says, "Most impressive to me was the intricate ballet between sailors and machines involved in launching and recovering aircraft. It is tough, demanding and dangerous work.” As seen in his first image, catapult launch of an aircraft from zero to 165 mph takes just two seconds!

“While it is impossible to capture the true spirit of the operations in a still photograph, I was honored to see the hard work and dedication of these sailors up close,” Tom adds.

Happy Veteran's Day!

"Sarajevo Rose" | BOOK OF JOB | Timothy Hyde

From 1993-1996, the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo endured a siege by Serbian-backed militias against mostly Muslim civilians. As the siege ended, anonymous individuals (still-unknown)used red epoxy to fill in the artillery scars at every spot where three or more people died. Tim Hyde's image of what remains is part of BOOK OF JOB, his solo fine art photography exhibition currently on display at Multiple Exposures Gallery.

Tim Hyde’s photographs have a way of penetrating deep into your bones. At first glance, they may seem to be of ordinary things—a bus stop, an empty field, a building that’s seen better times. Linger just a little bit longer though, and something ominous, maybe even sinister, rises up. You begin to see that “something happened here.” The specifics may be elusive—Tim shares only the location and the year—but you understand you are bearing witness.

To experience Tim's work is to be reminded that no matter how hard we try as humans to distance ourselves from the consequences of our actions, the land does not forget what we would rather leave behind.

Don't miss BOOK OF JOB.

Today is the first day of BOOK OF JOB, Timothy Hyde's terrific new solo fine art photography exhibition. BOOK OF JOB revisits the three projects that have consumed much of Tim's creative energies and time in the past two decades, projects that explore surprisingly similar themes — natural disasters, night prowls, and what he describes as "the ever-present scourge of our species, neighbor-against-neighbor violence."

BOOK OF JOB is on view at Multiple Exposures Gallery through November 17, 2024. Open daily 11am-5pm. The gallery is located in Studio 312 in the Torpedo Factory Art Center at the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
