In Lauren Woods (@laurenwoodsart) video art and performance titled, “The Veil”: she begins and ends by finding and leaving the veil, which delicately floats through a tranquil forest of light and shadow.
Lauren writes, “This video is a visual meditation on the nature of time and the duality of our corporeal and spiritual existence. Are we only our bodies, or is there something intangible and mysterious to human presence? Do we travel on a linear path, on an endless wheel, or do we exist in an infinite variety of potentials happening eternally all at once? Are we solitary players or interconnected in ways we can’t always perceive? These questions have inspired myth, religions, rituals, and concepts of civilization throughout history; how do they invite us to think about our responsibility to each other and the spaces we inhabit?” Here’s a clip from Lauren’s video!
Lauren Wood’s video is on view in Studio 9 of the Torpedo Factory Art Center as a part of “Body Talk” through October 30. To view our online exhibition catalog: https://torpedofactory.org/partners/target-gallery/

Ash Hagerstrad’s (@jesusluvsmemes) work is a complex theatre of three separate GIFs, which artfully depict the uncertainty and anxiety of bodily health in the modern world. In her first video of the series, “Call Me Beep Me”, her character is depicted as a young woman waiting for notification of test results from her MyChart on “grim mobile”, her fictional cell phone carrier. Ash writes, “Call me beep me explores the anxiety of receiving health notifications on your phone and the moment of bodily merging with an electronic device that holds the answers to your fate.”
Ash’s second video in the series, “Dating Sim 1”, is a depiction of digital romance simulations. Some of the difficulties of dating are sensitively and subtly revealed through this video. As Ash explains, “Dating Sim I considers digital romance simulations with disabled bodies…featuring disabled women developed by men on 4chan…the final game was praised for its humanity and kindness…regarding the sexual aspects of the game…original sketches for the game were dehumanized and fetishistic…the words at the bottom of the screen are taken from a pickup line I received in a bar while holding my cane.”
The third video in Ash’s series, “Self-diagnosis”, explores the process of self help through medical diagnosis. In this video, the character is depicted as both a doctor, armed with a stethoscope; and as a patient, apparently dressed in costume, identified by the caption, “Doctor’s hate her”. The prompt at the bottom of the screen reads, “Enter your symptoms here:...”. As told by Ash, “Self-diagnosis explores the process of becoming both doctor and patient while exploring the body through the process of digital medical research.”
“Body Talk” is on view in Target Gallery and in Studio 9 the Torpedo Factory Art Center through October 30. To view our online exhibition catalog: https://torpedofactory.org/partners/target-gallery/

The artist Dek (@dekdekson) creates for us a virtual world of living color through which he encapsulates the experience of longboarding, or “sidewalk surfing” on his board in his video, “New Trucks & Wheels/ Disintegrate”. The video begins by depicting the routine maintenance of replacing the trucks and wheels on the board, through which we are drawn into a more detailed view of the experience by the visualization of a rainbow of pixelated colors in this game styled virtual world, where the artist becomes the personification of his avatar. When the routine work of fixing the trucks and wheels is complete, we see him finding freedom from care as he rides away on his board. Relating this experience to us, he writes, “As I add new trucks and wheels to my longboard, the video image disintegrates into colors and pixels. The image returns to normal when I go outside and experience the freedom of riding the board.” Here’s a clip of Dek’s video!

Jessica Valoris (@jessicavaloris) is filmed on a beach, carrying chains into the sea in her video piece, “Return”. Jessica writes, “‘Return’ is a movement meditation that references the connection between our bodies, the waters, and flight. Honoring the ancestors of Igbo Landing, and their return through the waters, this ritual of return echoes histories of fugitive practice and collective resistance.” Here's a clip of Jessica's video!

Jenna Alderiso (@poorlycutbangs) considers the body in relation to the “metaphorical landscape of an individual’s internal and external worlds” in her video, “The Body Keeps the Score”. Jenna writes, “The symbolism of the vessel as the human body, and the ocean as an uncontrollable force of nature, ask the performer to protect, adapt, and rebuild.” Here’s a clip from Jenna’s video!

Using stop motion animation and 3D imaging, Laurie Berenhaus (@laurie_berenhaus) explores the changes of her body over time in “Phenakistoscope_n1_Looped”, mimicking the appearance of the first ever stop motion animation device.
Laurie writes, “I began 3D scanning my body, in response to varied health challenges causing my weight to fluctuate dramatically between 2018-2019. The process of altering images through alternative photographic techniques and intuitive play was both cathartic and frightening. The following entries are a byproduct of deconstructing past selves, exploration and above all, a necessary purge to aid in regaining autonomy of one’s body.”
You can view Laurie's animation in "Body Talk", on view in Target Gallery through October 30. To check out the exhibition catalog, follow this link: https://torpedofactory.org/partners/target-gallery/

Sarah Nance’s (@sarahenance) work “marseille tidal gauge aria” is a haunting vocal shroud composed from 130 years of tidal gauge data from the bay of Marseille, France, converted into individual notes and set to a poem from Rasu-Yong Tugen’s "Songs from the Black Moon". The result is an emotional aria, performed operatically. as each higher note reminds the listener of the dramatic change in the sea levels of the Mediterranean.
Sarah Nance’s performance is on view in Target Gallery through the 11th of September as part of our “Turning Tides” exhibition centered around the effects of and attitudes towards climate change. Stop by Target Gallery any day between 10AM-6PM to check out the exhibition.

Syd Lewin’s (@genderqueergargoyle) video work, “Porifera Utopia Now!” weaves together humor, personal experience, and the slow growth of the Antarctic glass sponge as “a guide to cripping the relentless march of capitalist productivity-oriented time – the cultural foundation which creates our current ecological emergency.” The theme of non-linear time is explored through the personal lens of the filmmaker and their profound difficulty in grappling with the imminence of the climate crisis in general. Here's a clip from Syd's video.

Our final artist spotlight for our pop-up video exhibition, “Through These Eyes”, is Nancy Wyllie!
Nancy Wyllie (@nancywyllie6) is an experimental video artist who uses her art to speak on issues of race and cultural identity. Her film “Getting Under Our Skin'' uses archival materials and candid one on one interviews to reveal the persistence of skin color bias. Wyllie’s film takes the viewer through the science, nature, history, and culture of color dating back to Ancient Egypt, and asks us to reconsider our perception of color and race as a means of coming to terms with centuries of misinformation and racial strife.
“Through These Eyes” is now on view through September 4th in Studio 9 at the Torpedo Factory art center. To view "Getting Under Our Skin" come visit Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays!

Angelica Verdan is a Filipino American video artist deconstructing the idea of digital presence and how it manifests and functions differently than physical identity. Her film “To Be Fully Seen” is an introspective self-portrait that grapples with identity online and in real life. Verdan writes “I invite the viewer to reflect on their own identities and define, or redefine, who they are in all spaces”
“Through These Eyes” is now on view through September 4th in Studio 9 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. To see Angelica's film, stop by Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Chris Comb’s (@ccombsdc) time-based artwork “Clear Cut '' presents dwindling numbers on a sleek wall-mounted wooden face, integrating technology and natural material to offer a commentary on the connection between consumerism and the climate crisis. Combs explains that the work “suggests a connection between consumer demand for flat-pack furniture and deforestation” The rapidly decreasing numbers create an inescapable anxiety about the irreversible and continuous damage done to the climate.
Chris’s work is on view in Target Gallery through the 11th of September as part of our “Turning Tides” exhibition centered around the effects of and attitudes towards climate change. We will also have an exhibition reception next Friday, August 12 from 7-9PM during the Art Center’s August Late Shift.

Today’s spotlight artist from our pop-up video exhibition, "Through These Eyes", is Jessica Valoris.
Jessica Valoris (@jessicavaloris) is a multidisciplinary artist who seeks to create sacred spaces through her use of ritual performance, sound collage, and mixed media painting. She describes her film “Ode to Zipporah” as “the culmination of a month-long Black August practice of creating embodied poetry about Black liberation and fugitivity.” About the intention of her work, Valoris states, “My art is both balm and blueprint: mapping out pathways for the Black liberatory imagination and reviving recipes for collective care."
“Through These Eyes” is now on view through September 4th in Studio 9 at the Torpedo Factory art center. To see "Ode to Zipporah" stop by Studio 9 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays or Sundays!
