On Friday, June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth with our Poet in Residence KaNikki Jakarta!

KaNikki has been featured on NBC, WUSA9 and Comcast. She is the Inaugural Poet In Residence for Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association. She is an Award-Winning Performance Poet who has toured the US and the UK. KaNikki is the First Black Poet Laureate of Alexandria, Virginia, the author of three novels, two poetry collections, a memoir, a short story, poetry collection entitled ALABAMA GIRL, VIRGINIA WOMAN.

Stop by the Athenaeum on Friday from 6 to 8pm and discover the history of Juneteenth through art, African drumming, vendors, and poetry that marks the liberation of Black Americans.

Discover the history of Juneteenth through art, African drumming, vendors, and poetry that marks the liberation of Black Americans.

For this Celebration we are thrilled to present Hostess: KaNikki Jakarta and three magnificent Artists: Ayanna Gallant, The HipHopMomma Princess Best aka “The HEALACIST” and 13 of Nazareth.

Artisan vendors include: Great Publishing Company LLC, H BOOKS, Aya Cultural Arts Studio, and True Remedy. Attendees will have the opportunity to support the vendors and talk with the artists and purchase their products throughout the event. The Athenaeum is offering Adinkra printmaking activities for all ages.

Through abstraction, details are distilled from a larger picture and transformed by feeling. What begins as a subject becomes something new, an object in itself. Like an abstract painting, the image no longer represents; it exists. In the space where words fall short, abstraction gives form to emotion, memory, and the subconscious.
