You probably picture a Roman soldier wearing the famous lorica segmentata.
But there’s another piece of armor that deserves much more attention.
The lorica gallica (or Hamata, but this is a neologism) — Roman chain mail.
Made from thousands of interlocking metal rings, it was flexible, durable and highly adaptable. Unlike rigid armor, it allowed considerable freedom of movement while providing protection against many battlefield threats.
And here’s the interesting part:
The Romans used it for centuries.
The Roman military constantly evolved. Weapons changed. Tactics changed. Equipment changed.
But the lorica gallica remained in use throughout much of Roman history, alongside other forms of armor.
It was used by both legionaries and auxiliaries, although exactly who wore what varied depending on the period and context.
Why?
Because sometimes the best piece of equipment isn’t the newest one.
It’s the one that works. And the one cheaper to fix.
And the Romans understood that very well. ⚔️

Ancient Rome sounds completely made up sometimes.
Shields used as weapons. Soldiers throwing their weapons before charging into close combat. Giant horns acting as a battlefield communication system.
And an empire that learned how to fight at sea by studying its greatest naval enemy.
The craziest part?
It was all real. ⚔️
