Can a portrait exist without a person behind it?
In Neural Decay, Mario Klingemann uses archival portraits and self-trained neural networks to create faces that belong to no one. Built from many different faces, these images question what happens to identity when a person is turned into data.
Printed on brushed stainless steel, the works continue to change as the surface scratches and tarnishes over time. The digital image slowly becomes part of a physical process of change and decay.

Sheung Yiu , one of the artists featured in the Poor Traits exhibition. His work explores how we read faces and how meaning is shaped by the way we look at them. Rather than treating a portrait as a direct reflection of a person, Yiu questions the assumptions and systems we bring to images. Our interpretations can reveal as much about us as about the person portrayed.

On 14 October, BBA Gallery will host artist talks with Christian A. Lang .a.lang, Theresa Reiwer and Vishal Shah .io.

For Vishal Shah’s talk, we’ll look at Legends and Vellum, two works that explore the space between external identity and internal reality.
In Legends, public identity is built through the gradual loss of the private self, while Vellum transforms the human face into a fluid, shifting landscape. Together, the works question whether a portrait is really found in appearance, or in the more hidden and vulnerable layers beneath it. This is closely connected with Poor Traits and its exploration of how identity is constructed, perceived and transformed.

Vishal Shah is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist and the Managing & Creative Director of BBA Gallery. He works through ideas, storytelling and personal mythologies. His practice explores the tension between identity and self, looking at how both can be shaped, presented and transformed.

Theresa Reiwer , one of the artists featured in the Poor Traits exhibition. Her work explores how we recognise presence, identity and intelligence in digitally constructed beings. Beginning with a familiar human face that gradually merges with forms resembling roots and digital networks, Reiwer challenges the idea of identity as something contained within the individual, suggesting instead that being is shaped through relations.

On 14 October, BBA Gallery will host artist talks with Christian A. Lang .a.lang, Theresa Reiwer and Vishal Shah .io.

For Theresa Reiwer’s talk, we’ll look at her digitally constructed portrait, where a familiar human face gradually merges with forms that resemble both roots and digital networks.
Rather than treating identity as something fixed within the individual, the work suggests that who we are is shaped through relationships and connections. This closely reflects one of the central ideas of Poor Traits: how much of identity belongs to the individual, and how much is shaped by the world around us?

Theresa Reiwer is a post-digital artist working across video, XR and immersive installation. Combining 3D animation, motion capture, AI and analogue methods, she explores how digital systems reshape identity, perception and human experience.

Come hear Theresa speak about the ideas behind her work and the way she thinks about portraiture.

On 14 October, BBA Gallery will host artist talks with Christian A. Lang .a.lang, Theresa Reiwer and Vishal Shah .io.

For Christian A. Lang’s talk, we’ll look at his series Oszillationen. Shot on medium-format analogue film and viewed through textured glass, the portraits move between vulnerability and strength, presence and distance.
Rather than offering a fixed image of the person, the series draws attention to the viewer’s own memories and perceptions. This closely reflects one of the central ideas of Poor Traits: how much of a person can a portrait really reveal?

Christian A. Lang is a photographer and filmmaker whose work explores the space between presence and absence, document and imagination. He was shortlisted for the BBA Photography Prize 2025 and is also the photographer behind the cover image of Poor Traits.

Jaroslav Drazil J A R O S L A V D R A Z I L, first prize winner of the BBA Artist Prize 2026 and one of the artists featured in Poor Traits exhibition. His work takes the viewer far beyond the figure itself, constantly considering the thoughts, emotions and stories that bring us in to his world. Using character with lightheartedness in combination with large aesthetic painting techniques, Drazil is no ordinary painter.
