We are delighted to present ‘Let’s Unicorn’, ’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, opening on Friday, October 30, 2026

Faithful to his usual interest in societal topics, in his new body of work the artist invites us to enter a more positive environment, escaping the conflicts and absurdities of our polarized world to find shelter in a parallel universe of unicorns.
 Hybrid creatures have always populated Gutheil’s visual worlds, but the unicorns in this series deliberately carry deeply positive connotations. They offer a moment of refuge from reality, bringing hope and vibrant color to dark and overwhelming times. Blending his signature rough brushwork, bold patterns and tongue-in-cheek humor, Gutheil creates a playful figurative dreamscape.

‘Let’s Unicorn’ is not only an exhibition title but a call to spread empathy, humanity and unity

David Moses’s ‘29S003’ (After ‘Springtime’, 1929) physically layers, overpaints, and erases frames from Disney’s early animated shorts until only their gesture and rhythm survive the stripping-away of a century of cultural meaning. His recent work draws on two ‘Silly Symphonies’ in particular: ‘Toby Tortoise Returns’ (1936), whose wild dynamics and exaggerated movement let him address the overload of information we live with now, and ‘Springtime’ (1929), staged similarly to a theater, the camera moving mostly left to right with small-sized figures held at center frame, their quirkiness and unrefined style drawn out by zooming in rather than by movement. Because the ‘Silly Symphonies’ were composed to music written before the animation, rhythm stays central to his own compositions too: repeating patterns and corresponding elements built to be read almost like listening to music.

Xuejing Wang’s ‘Blue is Blue’ seals a childhood memory of near-drowning inside twenty-five small drops of glass, where the word “blue” is cast in rusted metal and left to drift as the material cools around it, allowing the letters to shift freely with the shape and temperature of the molten glass, creating natural bubbles. Blue is associated here with both calmness and danger, in a ‘mise-en-abîme’ of the word blue, the color, and the “feeling blue”. The work explores how such memories can resurface through bodily experience — through color, touch, breath, and fleeting physical sensations. The metal wire “blue” word floating into the glass is left to seek for oxygen from the abyss of the water — sometimes we see it almost making it to the surface, most times it just sinks back in. Each piece is an attempt to resurface and take a full breath of air, in a survival instinct.

In ‘Warmer Weather’, Austin Alphonse’s matador’s flamboyant costume and composed, handsome gaze betray the violence of his chosen profession. He performs his own character against the plainly dressed, cold-weather clothing of the men behind him, dictated by the simple necessity of keeping warm. Alphonse sheds light here on the tension between spectacle and brutality. Heroic pageantry brushes up against frivolous violence, showing us an insider view on the deeper level behind the surface lining.

Elsewhere the lining is a matter of the body. In ‘Das Portal’, Oska Gutheil shows us a crack into the matrix, a revelation from within, from the inner world of his characters — the colorful unicorn finding its way out of the tidy jacket and the squared surrounding of the background, like a breakthrough from the stiff structure.

Noa Yekutieli highlights her own history too: she shows Deceptive Visibility, an earlier artwork from 2021, representative of her lace-like paper-cuts, that creates mutual dependance of presence and absence. The piece is stripped of any sort of back lining and it’s hung directly onto the wall. We are then left with something bare yet complex. A window that it’s supposed to be opening onto a view, but that instead is the view. The empty spaces are as important as the full ones, and what can be perceived as just decorative patterns are in fact images of growing leaves that, folding open, leave space for images of ruins. The actual subject demands intention to be fully perceived: the shape of what we choose not to see, made visible anyway.

Achim Riethmann also answers his own decade: in ‘Versprechen’ (translation for Promise or Promises, intentionally ambiguous on its singular or plural nature), he returns to and repaints a watercolor from 2017, close to the gallery’s founding, adding a second, ghostly outline drawn onto the glass in front of the same hazmat-suited figure, who is holding some supposedly hostile atmosphere at bay behind a second skin of protective fabric. The work depicts a world where special measures and protection seem necessary. It suggests a sense of distance or alienation between the human and the environment. At the same time, the figure possesses a certain heroic, reassuring quality. In their left hand, they hold a small box — perhaps a control device? Or a trigger? There is always this contradiction between the promise(s) and the threat.
