Notes on access 🕊️

Everything you need to know about getting to and around Library Portal for the symposium this Saturday.

Northcote Station (Mernda line) is a 5-minute walk. The 11 and 86 trams stop nearby, and there’s street parking on Hawthorn Rd and surrounding streets.

The venue has step-free access and plenty of seating throughout the day. It’s a quirky old building, so some rooms are dimly lit and others full of natural light. If you have specific access needs, please let us know before the day and we’ll do our very best to accommodate you - [email protected]

A symposium on feminist, relational and pluriversal practices of world-making - a full day of talks, performance, music and art, opening into a communal Persian feast, live sitar, and some wiggly jazz to close the night.

Matter & Spirit is in its final two weeks. Timeball, the third and concluding exhibition of the project, closes at Seventh Gallery on Saturday 15 August at 6pm.

To mark the end of a six-month inquiry into matter, extraction, transformation, and site, we are bringing all of the artists together for a conversation that will move across all three exhibitions, unpacking the ideas that have run through the series - Jane Bennett’s conception of vibrant matter, Joshua Simon’s writing on neomaterialism, and the wider questions the works have raised about agency, extraction, infrastructure, and political economy.

Join Kym Maxwell, Nicholas Burridge, Leon Rice-Whetton, Katie Paine, Rachel Rovira, and Angus Brown alongside curator Lucie Loy. It is a chance to bring your own questions and thinking too.

Timeball is the third and final part of the Matter & Spirit series; looking at time, control and infrastructure. Artists Rachel Rovira and Katie Paine both research into how systems — clocks, gates, old rail and telegraph lines — were built to keep order, and what happens when they break down.

A closer look at Katie Paine's video work in Timeball. A monitor propped up on a bundle of rolled felt & a raw concrete block, an orange extension cord running loose — mimicking industrial infrastructure. These materials put the systems that carry the work — power, cable, screen — in the same frame as the systems the work is about.

A closer look at Rachel Rovira's drawings in Timeball; Five small studies — closer to field notes — made in the gaps of a summer spent on a festival maintenance crew in Adelaide.

Marks of loose graphite on thin paper, quick and gestural: tread patterns, a coils, studies of stairs, columns, and the joins of a latch fittings. Fragments of infrastructure most people walk past without registering — recorded as Rachel moved through the festival site. Routine rendered in quick lines, as its own kind of record-keeping.

Time itself — how we experience it now — was and remains a colonial technology. Standardised and broadcast to order commerce and movement.

Timeball sits with that idea from two directions: Katie Paine explores through archive, Rachel Rovira through the everyday choreography of a working site.

Rachel Rovira’s work comes out of a summer on the maintenance crew at a festival site in Adelaide — tracking gates opening and closing, irrigation systems on timers, the daily rhythms that keep a temporary site running to schedule.
Maintenance here isn’t background labour. It’s an ongoing negotiation with forces that exceed control — weather, growth, deterioration, the agency of matter itself.

Katie Paine’s research traces telegraphy, maritime timekeeping and early rail — how they ordered land, labour and empire across Hobson’s Bay, and how they persist by shapeshifting. Those same cable routes now carry fibre optic networks. A new empire, an old technology.
