"Oak Lodge" was donated to the National Trust in 1998 by the late Miss Muriel Horsfall. Miss Horsfall wished that the house be opened as a museum. After several years in which the house was not opened to the public, and the building suffered the depredations of rodents and silverfish, the Coal River Valley Historical Society offered to manage the property as a museum. The National Trust agreed, an

d in 2002 the historical society opened "Oak Lodge" as a museum. Unfortunately, in 2003, the National Trust, facing financial difficulties, attempted to sell the property. Miss Horsfall expressed her displeasure, and facing a huge community backlash, the National Trust backed down. In November 2008 Miss Horsfall passed away aged 102, and in July 2012 the National Trust advised the historical society that they may have to sell "Oak Lodge" due to their inability to secure additional State Government funding.
