Exploring the complexities of women’s lives in pre-Civil War Spain, Eva Fernandez’s ‘Renegade Women’ series confronts women’s suffrage and historical erasure. Through found portrait photographs, personal archives and family letters, these works weave a powerful feminist counter-narrative.
Centring women on the threshold of modernity, the photographs foreshadow an aggressive recontainment of freedoms, as well the endurance and dignity that persisted despite this. Drawing from letters written to her mother by her parents after her mother’s migration from Spain, Fernandez embroiders language of obligation and shame onto these images, transforming them into a feminist reclamation of strength, memory and identity.
