⚓ Throw your weight behind Alma!

After years of restoration, Alma Doepel is preparing to sail to Hobart for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2027. But before she can go, she needs something vital: 10 tonnes of lead ballast to help meet her stability requirements for survey.

That is 238 blocks. We are inviting supporters to sponsor one for $250.

The special part? You can sign or decorate your block before it is secured inside Alma’s hull. Your message will travel with her on every voyage to come.

Each block brings Alma closer to returning to sea and, in time, welcoming young people aboard for voyages that build confidence, resilience and purpose.

Sponsor a block. Leave your mark. Help Alma sail again.

⛵ Help take Alma Doepel to Hobart in 2027

Alma Doepel is preparing to sail from Melbourne to Hobart for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2027.

This will be a major milestone in her return to service, and we are now seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to join the sailing crew or support the voyage as a volunteer.

You do not need maritime experience to volunteer. We will need help with voyage preparation, logistics, catering, provisioning, merchandise, fundraising, administration, communications and festival activities.

You will need to be available for crew training and inductions from October - January, and then voyage dates in February.

For the first time since 1976, the historic Alma Doepel is set to return to Hobart for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2027.

The voyage will be the ship’s first major interstate journey following her extensive restoration and will mark 50 years since Alma Doepel departed Hobart for a new life in Victoria, working with young people.

Subject to survey and regulatory approval, the team is now focused on completing critical works, undertaking sea trials and preparing the ship and crew for a safe passage.

Hobart 2027… here we come!!

Alma Doepel is going to Hobart!

For the first time since 1976, Alma Doepel will return to Hobart for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2027.

The Board of Sail & Adventure Ltd has formally approved the voyage, marking Alma Doepel’s first major interstate passage following her restoration. It will also be 50 years since she departed Hobart for a new life in Victoria, working with young people.

The timetable is tight. Our immediate priority is completing the critical work required for survey, sea trials and a safe passage from Melbourne to Hobart.

We are now calling for:

⚓ Experienced crew for sea trials, the delivery and return voyages, and Festival operations (EOI details will be posted next week)

⚓ Sponsors and donors to support essential works, safety equipment, voyage costs and youth participation

⚓ Skilled volunteers in electrical work, carpentry, rigging, painting, engineering, deck work, provisioning and voyage preparation

A limited number of passenger places will also be available. Details and an expression of interest process will be announced soon.

This voyage is about much more than reaching Hobart. It is about returning Alma Doepel to active service and preparing her to change the lives of the next generation of young people.

There is still a great deal of work ahead, but the decision has been made.

Alma Doepel is going to Hobart.

Donate now and help make this historic voyage possible.
